The Contented Cows message

Are your people fully engaged and focused on giving their best effort or are they doing only enough to keep them employed?
As Bill and Richard point out in this book(a revised and updated version of their first book), each of your employees have the ability to control the amount of discretionary effort they put into their work. How much they give can very slightly from day to day, depending on how they feel their effort is valued by you and your leadership team each day they are there. Some may refer to this as their "internal attitude" and each of them are in control of it.
This book covers a lot of area, including why your company values and your ability to effectively influence the people who build the product or greet your customers are so important to the bottom line results generated.
So how do leaders gain the effective influence with the people whom they are leading that will drive the consistent positive results they seek? Here are a few you should know.
1.)They set realistic and achievable goals for their people with appropriate rewards for achievement, for both tactical short term and strategic long term goals.
Without a clear compelling direction in place; employees feel what you have given them is just the "flavor of the month" policy and their attitudes and efforts will reflect this.
2.)They come across as authentic and "walk the talk". Bill Hewlett and David Packard of Hewlett Packard are great examples of this. They had an approach to business unmatched in their industry. I know this, because I worked for them when Bill and Dave were still running the business.

3.)They empower there people to make decisions and take ownership of their processes, rewarding them appropriately which further inspires them to part with more of their discretionary effort. People need to feel and see the impact their effort has on both internal and external customers. As leaders, we need to help them make those connections and to communicate a clear and compelling picture of the direction we're going for are team as often as possible.
If the message you send, both spoken and unspoken, is that your people are a bunch of under-performers, them that's the results you will get from them.
