Very Good

From Richard Ali comes another Nigerian novel whose subject comprises both love and chaos at the same time. It's a very good book to read to understand religious, ethnic, and political crises in Nigeria. Some details in this book --Funmi being raped by her uncle, for example--I felt after reading, are irrelevant to the focus of the primary narrative of the text. The author is too wordy sometimes, making the story to drag, especially toward the end. Nevertheless, CITY OF MEMORIES is truly interesting.

*Starred Review* During folklore's first and greatest period, the end of the nineteenth century, such gifted writers as Lady Gregory and William Butler Yeats wandered the Irish countryside, gathering the oral vestiges of a great tradition. Publishing their gleanings later, sometimes altered in transcription, they garnered an audience eager for tales of heroes, fairies, and gods. Such compilations as theirs remain major sources of Irish mythology. One of the best-known seanachies, or traditional tale spinners, in Ireland today, Lenihan is an Irish-speaking schoolmaster in the very area where Gregory and Yeats gathered their tales. He discloses that, despite the arrival of fax, Internet, and cell phone, the old tales persist. His fresh collection includes some famous motifs, such as the "fairy blast" that steals away people and things, but also such regionally specific figures as Biddy Early, the White Witch of Clare--a historical figure around whom myths have accrued. Lenihan focuses on the "other crowd" of the title: the fairy people, who are the diminished remnants of old gods, still able to affect the world of humankind. This is not quaint fluff but the powerful, sometimes disturbing lore of a world parallel to and occasionally intersecting ours. A major contribution to its field, the book is also compulsively readable, not least because Green, an audio producer, has helped capture the torque of Irish speech in Lenihan's storytelling. Very interesting book.

This collection of collected narratives and commentary was enjoyable and informative. Some of the stories were collected fairly recently; they are a testament to the still-living "fairy faith" of Irish people. The commentary was very informative. I think of the faith as a sort of underground religion coexisting with mainstream churches of the British Isles that despite so much change has managed to survive, so this book appealed to me.

Well balanced

I found out about this book through the radio program "To the Best of Our Knowledge". It is a delightful collection of stories, written in the various tellers' own voices. It is as easy to read, as it is to listen to a story. At the end of each story the author writes a brief reflection, either linking the story with folkloric commonalities or pointing out areas for more "rational" explanations, but he never ruins the "magic". It is a good read from both a sociological/folkloric studies perspective and from a more magically indulgent perspective.

Fairies aren't funny

If you think fairies are little winged creatures to amuse children, think again. Lenihan has collected Irish folk tales that show the serious and often the dangerous side of the world of fairy -- a world very much alive in the traditions of Ireland. Not all encounters with the world of fairy lead humans to disaster, but be warned that some of these stories are NOT bedtime reading if you want to sleep well.

Looking forward to using this book in anger

Self-respecting writers (and, for that matter, self-loathing ones) have bookshelves groaning with reference works. It's an occupational hazard that either the precise book you need is inexplicably lost, loaned, missing in action or, just as bad, you can't remember which one contains that vital reference. Mark Broatch's 'In A Word: The Essential Tool for Finding the Perfect Word' does a lot to bridge those gaps between the writer's mind, dictionary and thesaurus.

In time, 'In A Word' may become an indispensable guide for those who work with words -- whether trying against all odds to meet a looming deadline or labouring under pressure and the numbing volume of choice. Maybe you're struggling to write a headline for an overdue article, or you're an editor trying to replace the one a clueless contributor has supplied. In most cases, that editor's memory -- augmented by a glance in a thesaurus to reassure herself she hasn't forgotten a better option -- does the trick. But sometimes what you need is a category tool-chest, the Swiss Army Multitool of word choices. Imagine you're rushing to get a film review up on your website ahead of the competition but the headline in front of you is as hackneyed as a 1960s comedy. Open 'In A Word' to the Contents section, look up 'Art & Media', go to the 'Film' category on page 126, and you'll find not only criticism elements -- words and phrases like box office, casting and subtext -- but also synonyms for film and film genres.

So far I've made it sound as though this book is aimed exclusively at writers working in print or online. But 'In A Word' is also a tool for newsrooms, creative agencies, PR professionals, agents and anyone who sells ideas and products.

If you're desperately seeking word associations, character descriptions or the right way to sum up a state of mind it'll probably be revealed following a glance at the Contents section. With time to kill you can benefit just from browsing it, but I'm looking forward to the next opportunity I have to use it in anger. Broatch hasn't set himself the impossible task of making a dictionary, thesaurus or style book redundant -- this is a more specialised publication than any one of those -- he describes it in his introduction as a "cheat sheet", but even a few moments thumbing through it reveal it to be far more substantial than that.

The 'Reference' section at the back is likely to be especially useful to those in a rush. You're programmed to fail if you set out to do justice to everyone's "seminal artworks" and noted personalities (for instance, the "Prominent Film Directors" list omits Wim Wenders and no doubt others). It's the nature of such lists that you ignore somebody considered prominent by someone, somewhere. Nevertheless, the lists of genres, types, noises, weapons and all manner of things you may never have seen on a single page are bound to come in handy at some time -- assuming you can remember where to look.

And that's perhaps the biggest drawback of maintaining a reference library: locating the right source just when you need it. As related to Elliott, Fedders's story moves from her birth in Maryland in 1943, through 16 years as an abused wife, to her divorce in 1985 from John R. Fedders, an official of the Securities Exchange Commission. The couple lived graciously in Washington, where in the privacy of their home the husband beat his wife and browbeat their five sons. In a less melodramatic telling, the book would more forcefully call needed attention to the problem of abused women. It is made abundantly clear that Fedders suffered brutality but the reason why she endured it for so many years is not satisfactorily explained. Elliott's contention that the victim's Catholic upbringing trained her to submissiveness is not entirely convincing. And there is no analysis of why the husband, with the same religious background, became a dangerous bully. Elliott is a reporter for Washingtonian magazine. Should be required reading for middle school students

I read this book initially 25 years ago, and I think it should be required reading for middle school students in that the message is "Girls, you don't have to take this from anyone," and "Boys--this is NOT how you treat girls!" My late grandmother told me my freshman year of college that it's now time to start looking for a husband. I thought, "noooooo....I need to GRADUATE first!" I'm glad I didn't heed her advice, as one of my best friends from college was more "MRS" degree-oriented, and she later had to escape her abusive marriage. This book taught me a lot, and I'm proud of Ms. Fedders' courage.

When Wife-Beating was "Acceptable"

People tend to live according to social norms and mores, rather than according to laws. When readers ask "why did she stay with an abusive man for 17 years" the answer is clear; leaving the husband wasn't "acceptable". Fedders would have gotten no support if she'd left her husband in the early years of their marriage (or later even). The courts would've given custody to her husband, she wouldn't have gotten any alimony, and she might've had trouble getting a job (employers could refuse to hire a divorced woman). Besides, her husband was "respectable" and she would've had no advocate. In those days, women were trapped. The codified law that says "beating someone is illegal" didn't apply to the marriage; it was the norms and mores that ruled, and those norms and mores said that wife beating was to be tolerated "tolerated for the good of the marriage".

Did Fedder's Catholic upbringing have anything to do with it? Maybe so. If she'd gone to talk to a Priest, what would he have done? In those days, the Priest wouldn't call the husband to his office and chew him out! He wouldn't threaten to excommunicate him for beating his wife! If she'd told the Priest "why must I stay in a marriage where I'm being abused" he would've said "you're a Catholic, make the best of it". What could she do?

In the 1980's, I saw campaigns in the form of TV ads, TV sitcom episodes, and magazine articles, encouraging women to stand up to abusive husbands. Spousal abuse was becoming a public issue, and people were beginning to see it as "unacceptable". But years earlier, it was simply tolerated. Back in the 1960's, men were rarely arrested for beating their wives or children. Beating one's wife was on par (according to mores and norms of the time) with breaking in a pet. Watch THE BURNING BED if you want an example.

We debate the merits of "social engineering", where masses of people change their attitudes. Some say it's "changing times" that change people, but books like these really can "engineer" social norms. By the 1990's, not only was wife-beating seen as unacceptable, but so was sexual harassment, child molestation, tenant harassment, and other forms of injustice. There was a time when sexual abuse was rarely reported, but now it's taken more seriously. Look at the Catholic Church sex abuse lawsuits as an example. Nobody is immune.

Even today, people can be trapped in abusive relationships, and it doesn't always involve beatings. For instance, a mentally ill husband controls his family by threatening suicide, and pressures his wife into doing everything his way. Or an abusive mother threatens to kill her sons pets if the boy doesn't obey.

The bottom line is, when the Fedders were married, there was no place to turn to if you were in an abusive marriage.

This book was very good.

Charlotte really went through some very hard times with her husband

John. I am glad to hear she was able to break away and control her own life. I was shocked to read just how mean this man could be.

I first saw this movie on TV some years back and it was good but the book is so much better. It goes into a lot more detail about

her marriage to John. I hope that John has gotten help for his need to control everyone. Who did he think he was?

Good, but achievable?

I would first of all like to offer some insight into Benjamin Banks' review - which is negative, but completely understandable. This book, 12 weeks to better than ever, is a COMPLIMENTARY book to another one of Mark's books - Master Level Fitness. That is the book where it actually explains the different exercises complete with pictures. 12 Weeks to Better than Ever is a program that is divided into 3 levels - beginner, intermediate, and advanced with each being 12 weeks long - in this book no explanations of exercises are given - only which exercise to do, and how many repetitions to do them, day by day outlined in specific detail.

The drawback to this program is that not everybody will be able to follow the 12 week program without hitting a plateau. There are built in routines to try to avoid plateaus, but they are still inevitable if you follow the book to the tee. In addition, at master level the repetitions get ridiculously high - nearing 500 pullups and 500 pushups in a single workout! This is obviously too time consuming for the average individual, but I am sure there are some athletes willing to test themselves with this.

For those of you who already own this book and have been frustrated, and given up, here's what I recommend. The instructions say to allow only 15-30 seconds rest in between sets. I advise you to take as much time as necessary. This way you will increase your volume and be able to improve at your own pace. Those of you who have the book will understand what I'm talking about.

For those of you interested in Navy SEAL fitness, I highly recommend Stew Smith's Complete Guide to Navy SEAL Fitness. I feel that it is more doable and more interesting than this program. Even though Mark's program starts out easier than Stew's it ends up being harder ten-fold by the end of the program. So I would recommend doing Stew's book first, then going to this book if you are still interested in high repetition calisthenics.

Very poor effort , Mark!

I had Mark's first book; it was a good program; so I ordered this thinking he had some new stuff added since it was 10 years from the last book. WRONG! This is a disappointing waste of money and time. First, no illustrations of the excercises since I forgot what some were( and he gives them crazy names too) , secondly, he just devotes a couple of paragraphs to "rah, rah you can do it" philosophy and nutrition. The book ends up being book of charts to check off as you go thru his "program". Then he pitches some supplements he obviously owns thru a company. Very disappointing...not up to the SEAL creed of performance I say.And he doesn't include swimming in the program. Do yourself a favor..don't waste you money. If you are famaliar with the pyramid method of working out, do that and increase the reps as you need too.

Very Helpful

Very good book and worth buying. You may want to buy two because I use mine like a log book and its a 12 week program. Its a tweleve week program broken down to begginer, intermediate, and advance so all will like it. I highly recommend any of Mark DeLisle books as great buys.
All of his workouts are designed to give like he states a "triathlete" body profile, not a bodybuilder profile. If your looking for practical fitness this is the place to start.

Oh My Ra! This book will make you howl!

What can I say? I loved the whole spin on Sadie Hawkins' dance, and the boys were so cute in these stories (ah, if only high school were really like that, LOL). I liked the artwork of this graphic novel a tad bit more than the first one, but that's all up to your personal preference. My daughter is a little too young to read this, but when she's older, this would be a great graphic novel for her. Some may argue stereotypical character portrayals of archetypes, but hey, c'mon....it's based in a HIGH SCHOOL, we were all stereotypes. I'm WAY older than these characters, but I still get a chuckle out of reading their stories here. Ah, good times...

Bruce Clayton is a well-known survival expert, author of Life After Doomsday, Fallout Survival and Thinking About Survival, coauthor of Survival Books and Urban Alert, and former publisher of The Survivalist Directory. Dr. Clayton is a state-certified instructor of radiological defense techniques and fallout shelter management in California and has been trained in disaster shelter management and damage assessment by the American Red Cross. Great book for getting ready for the worst senario...

This is THE best book on the subject of Nuclear war and other major disasters I have ever read. Dr. Clayton walks you through everything nuclear, from effects of air bursts, ground bursts, EMP, to every other nuclear topic imaginable. While famous for its nuclear information, this book is writen as a primer to surviving ANY disaster. Our Motto here at Alpha Group is(as you know) "It doesn't matter what causes the situation, you should be prepared to survive it". This book fits perfectly with that philosophy.
I consider this book one of the "MUST HAVE" books in any survival library. Not only does this book contain fantastic and interesting reading, but with its dozens of charts, lists, drawings and photos, this book serves as an excellent reference on surviving ANY major disaster. It is one of the few reference books I keep in my personal bookshelf beside the computer. When I read this book for the first time I was amazed by what I THOUGHT I knew. I was VERY wrong in many of my beliefs. Even the US government used Dr. Clayton's research to revise their policies in some areas.

Excellent primer on nuclear war and catastrophy survival

This book is a great beginning on understanding the logic of preparedness and the fundamentals of survival. The information is still current and the author's assesment of what a nuclear war might really be like is the single best feature of the book. I did not believe it until a read the same information from the Office of Technology Assesment [U.S. Goverment Publication] "Nuclear War; Three Scenarios"

THE Bible of Survivalism

This book was published during the nuclear arms race of the Carter and Reagan years, when the prospect of nuclear war looked much worse than it does now. Still...with the Y2K bug looming and countries like India and Pakistan now possessing the Bomb, you owe it to yourself to have a copy of this, "just in case". Besides covering the possible effects of nuclear war, it also covers a large variety of natural and man-made disasters, from floods to hurricanes to a financial crash to nuclear power plant accidents. Includes information on do-it-yourself emergency medicine, gardening and food storage, and shelter, that could be applicable to any number of potential disasters, not just nuclear war. What I like best about this book is it provides all this information without even a hint of the right-wing extremist politics that often infests other survivalist literature (the political slant here if anything seems to be closer to that of _The Mother Earth News_). As companion books to this I would highly recommend the _Foxfire_ books on traditional southern Appalachian skills, Cresson Kearny's _Nuclear War Survival Skills_, and David Werner's _Where There Is No Doctor_.
