This book was much of a dissappoinment. I'd rather read the following books on war instead of Neiberg's work: a) "War in human civilization" by Azar Gat; b) "War before Civilization. The Myth of the Peaceful Savage", by Lawrence Keeley; c) "How War Began" by Keith F. Otterbein; d) "War and Peace and War: The Rise and Fall of Empires" by Peter Turchin; and e) "War and the Law of Nations: A General History" by Stephen Neff.

Fascinating... but true?

Headlined as an investigation into the lives of three of the UK's most notorious 60's gamblers - James Goldsmith, John Aspinall & "Lucky" Lord Lucan - and claiming to reveal, for the first time, the true story behind Lucan's even more notorious "disappearance" - one of the UK's longest running murder mysteries - "The Gamblers" is a quite riveting insight into a bizarre world of power, glamour, addiction, fabulous wealth and self destruction. Like the friend who recommended it to me I read it virtually straight through and while I left with as many questions as answers I discovered, on the way, a whole host of mind-boggling facts about the people who populated London's most exclusive gambling den, "The Clermont Club", and its now iconic sister night-club, "Annabel's".

Cleverly underpinned by sufficient clearly genuine information to make you believe it all, you are, by the last third of the book, quite prepared to fully accept Pearson's take on Lucan's fate, even though the lines between objective analysis and sensationalist interpretation have in fact become fairly blurred. But no matter because, in the end, "The Gamblers" is much more than simply another title-selling angle on the Lord Lucan saga, rather an intriguing exploration into a part of London's "swinging sixties" scene that most of us never knew existed and a fascinating study of what draws the rich & privileged into the ridiculously high-risk world of big-money gambling.

Corbin traces this apparently unmotivated horror every which way, examines its details, seeks to explain its precedents, its unfolding, and its 'reasons' by reference to local conditions, crowd psychology, and historical circumstances. It's an excellent book that unites the best in the sensibility of the Annales to the traditions of histoire historisante, of history as it has classically been defined. This is disciplined and imaginative history. Corbin thinks innovatively, profoundly even, about the nature of the mob, its political and sociological situation, and about the political history of the region, its geography and its economy. He ranges back and forth through French history to explain a precise event, it is the interplay of scholarly presentation and imagination that makes this book so particularly taking. Murder and rage in rural France : Le village des cannibales

Alain Corbin uses enough detail to approach his always unique subjects, and never goes to the point of too much. The same approach is true for this book. If you're looking for extensive detail, you might consider another source. Murder and Rage... is a short book, and in it Corbin looks for answers to the big questions using small scenarios.

Among other questions, he asks how instrumental circulated rumors are to history. This story is one of a fairly lengthy chain. Fear and rage primarily fueled the peasants to kill and torture a man voicing his politics. Fear and rage then influenced others to execute the murderers--the alleged cannibalistic peasants. The event as a whole was chaos. Was this chain of events propelled by something in addition to rage, fear and madness? Yes, it was.

Corbin looks at the different ways French peasants and Parisians interpreted the incident as well as how the incident developed legendary status years after the fact. He'd like to know why and how chaos and turmoil become celebrated.

His sources are newspapers, court records from the trial, recorded testimony of the event and selected recent monographs.

Corbin doesn't offer concrete answers to his questions, and the questions he approaches might be best described as questions without concrete answers. I recommend this as an exploration of important questions most people don't stop to consider about crime. In a subliminal way, this book suggests knowing more of these answers that remain vague where crime is involved.

A young local aristocrat, a member of a well-known legitimist family, is accused by a mob of peasants of shouting Republican slogans & possibly of being a Prussian. He is then beaten, tortured and burned (possibly while still being alive). On the face of it, the incident at Hautefoye is so bizarre & inexplicable that it is hard to believe.

Alain Corbin attempts to explain the inexplicable, in a monograph which chronicles the isolation and grievances which shaped the lives of the inhabitants in and around Hautefoye. Mistrustful of the Bourbons, the clergy, the republicans & the July Monarchy, the peasants see Napoléon III as their protector & as the man who brought some prosperity to the people at the bottom. No wonder, when the Franco-Prussian War brought about the capture of Napoléon III and the imminent downfall of the government, that the peasants freaked out. Their enemies seemed to be closing in on them on all sides, and they were powerless to assist their emperor. Their only course of action was to lash out at an available target, with horrifying results.

It was interesting to read this after recently having completed American Mobbing, 1828-1861: Toward Civil War, which also deals at times with the phenomenon of mass hysteria and collective delusion. Mob violence seems to have been much less prevalent in France than in parts of the antebellum United States, but both books illustrate vividly how ordinary humans can be driven into committing extraordinary acts of savagery.

This is a specialized history, which assumes a fair amount of knowledge of 19th century French history. A newcomer to the subject might be a bit lost at times. The narrative is decent, but definitely academic in nature. It is an interesting treatment of a disturbing subject.

Great start for a new author

Life of the Party is one of those books. You know the type...it makes you think, and I mean really think; it sticks with you long after you have finished because you have become invested in the characters; it makes you cry. I hate it when books make me cry.

Mac and Riley are best friends. Their favorite pastime is to get drunk and high. Hey, they're young, why not? Everything is great until Riley decided he needs to get clean. Mac, feeling abandoned by her best friend, delves deeper into the world of drugs, trying to forget Riley and everything that is wrong with her life.

I loved, loved, loved the characters in this book (which I guess is why I felt so much for them that I was bawling my eyes out by the end). The author let us get into Mac's head and really enjoy being there. Mac, though young and stupid and obviously making mistake after mistake, was real. She had real problems and real choices and real feelings. And Grey...I so love Grey. It is obvious from the way he treats her that he loves Mac, but he is young and free and has the world ahead of him, so of course he makes mistakes, too. When he realizes, however, that things have gone too far he does the only thing he can think of to fix it, even if it is the wrong thing. We do not see much of Riley for most of the story and mostly get to know him through Mac's feelings and memories of him. Though Mac feels he abandoned her, he had always been there just waiting for the right time.

I think the thing I really loved about this story was about how realistic it is. From Mac's mom and dad (just ignore the problem, it will go away) to her sister and Mac's feelings of inferiority around her (which I can relate to having two perfect older sisters myself) to the drug use. The author did an exceptional job (in my humble opinion) of detailing and describing Mac's drug use and feelings. I did find myself thinking a few times, can someone really use that much cocaine and still be alive/walking/standing/coherent? But, I have absolutely no first-hand knowledge of the subject so it could be true. Even if it's not accurate, the author did a great job faking it and making me believe it was real.

I sincerely hope this author writes more books in the future. I loved everything about this story from the characters to the story to the writing style. She is an amazing storyteller and I thank her for sharing her story with us.

Addiction

I thought I would like this book with all of the other fab reviews. I was also intrigued by the summary description but it just wasn't for me. The cover just did nothing for me.

Mackenzie got to me right away, she seemed extremely spoiled and self absorbed. She never got better for me through the whole entire story, I just really didn't like her. Grey seemed horrible, I didn't get the appeal at all. I do have to say that the interaction between the characters was great. Riley was my favorite character out of all of them. He seemed to be the most sincere and most humane, always protecting and trying to do the right thing.

Overall the story was well written even though I had a hard time finishing it to the end.

Raw, Gritty and Emotional!!!

This was a very well written and thought provoking book. It deals with the raw, dark and realistic subject of drug use and addiction. The characters were well-developed and “real”. They made me care for them, worry about them, feel frustrated with them and left me completely invested in their story. The fact that I liked the characters, even the ones that might have been “questionable”, says something about the author’s ability to create an interesting and intense cast of characters.

Mackenzie is a seventeen year old girl who enjoys the party lifestyle. She is always looking for the next excuse to get drunk or high… usually the weekends are a good enough excuse. She partakes in this reckless behavior along with her best friend, Riley. They are inseparable and “partners in crime” in this drug induced pastime. When Riley comes to his senses and realizes that his life is going nowhere, he stops the partying and tries to change his habits. Mackenzie is not ready to change. She is young, invincible and wants to continue to have fun.

Mackenzie comes from a professional family. Her parents work long hours and this leaves her to fend for herself, she essentially has no rules. She has grown up in the shadow of her older sister. She has always felt inadequate to her in every way. Mackenzie gave up on trying to impress her family. She lives the way she wants to with little regard for the consequences.

Mackenzie’s life changes when she meets Grey Lewis. He is a gorgeous, sexy singer in a local rock band. She is immediately drawn to him. Despite his efforts to keep his distance from her, he is drawn to her too. He lives the reckless and carefree lifestyle of a rock musician and soon Mackenzie is immersed deeper into the drug world. Grey is older and has more life experience than Mackenzie. He didn’t have the upbringing that Mackenzie had. He has never had a good opinion of himself, but rather thinks of himself as a screw-up and a loser. Despite their excessive drug use, dependency and general dysfunction, Grey and Mackenzie have an undeniable love for one another.

I could go on and on about the story and the characters, but I don’t want to give too much of the story away. There is a lot that happens and it had me feeling every kind of emotion imaginable. I felt like I had been on an emotional roller coaster by the end of it. The up’s and down’s were intense and I felt as though I was living through it right along with the characters. It’s the type of book that will stay with you long after you have finished it. It does have a religious/spiritual aspect to it, but it isn’t overdone. I would definitely read more by this author!
