The Oneness of God Prevails

The "Oneness and the Trinity" is a scholarly work by David K. Bernard. Have you ever wondered how the trinitarian doctrine evolved from the basic Jewish understanding that God is One? (Here, O Israel, the LORD our God is ONE LORD. Deut. 6.4) In regards to the understanding of who Jesus is, Bernard traces the history of the early church from the post-apostolic age through the early catholic church and the Councils of Nicea and Constantinople, which defined who Jesus was in relationship to God. David Bernard asks the question in his book: "Why did this doctrine (trinitarianism) develop as it did?" He states, "The impetus for the first of the foregoing steps was the Greek philosophical concept of the Logos. Under its influence, the scriptural distinction between God and His Son, which related to the Incarnation, was wrongly imputed to the divine nature of God Himself. In seeking to analyze the New Testament by pagan categories of thought instead of by the context of the Scripture itself, including the prior revelation of the Old Testament, and by the illumination of the Holy spirit, the forerunners of trinitarianism failed to understand the Incarnation." He continues, "And why did these early theologians make such a blunder? They failed to purge themselves of the pagan ideas of their own past and culture. Instead of relying on the trnasforming power of the Holy Spirit, they tried too hard to be intellectually pleasing to their culture and society." I concur with Bernard's findings. As a teenage girl, I found myself in a Presbyterian church, loving God, but wondering who to pray to! They kept talking about the Father, the son, and the Holy Spirit. They called this a trinity or God in three persons. The more I studied, the more confused I became with the trinitarian concept. Didn't the Bible say God is a Spirit, and is not the Holy Ghost a Spirit. And are not both invisible? But Jesus, ahhh...he is a person, flesh and blood. Upon God leading me into the truth and a oneness Apostolic church, I quickly saw that there is only ONE God and his name is Jesus. Jesus said, "He who has seen me, hath seen the Father." And, "I and my father are ONE." The oneness concept of God makes perfect sense. One has to work too hard to prove the trinitarian concept. The Father robed himself in flesh and left his throne in Glory to become the sacrificial lamb of God so that MY sins would be forgiven. And then sent His Holy Spirit to live within me that I too might have eternal life. "For God so loved the world..." Therein is true sacrifice and love for HIS creation.

Mr. Bernard has a written a fairly easy to follow book about what early Christians really believed soon after the new testament began. Almost every trinitarian early church history glosses over or misrepresents what most Christians believed in that era and its disingenuous at best. Bernard shows clearly that Justin Martyr, Tertullian, Origen, hypollotus and another writer I have forgotten all said that THE MAJORITY OF CHRISTIANS IN THEIR TIME WERE MODALISTIC MONARCHIANS. There are always two sides to a story and this is the other side that must be told, and I'm glad he is telling it.
Of the oneness writers on early christianity I would say I agree with Mr. Bernards treatment more than others. There are a few reasons why. First, he doesn't outright comdemn the MOntanists as other writers do. I believe his treatment was fair because the MOntanists as any group were complicated and their views have been mischaracterized. I think Montanism is a subject that is screaming for more study. In addition he states very clearly that oneness believers cannot accept dynamic monarchian doctrine as truth. Some other writers really want dynamic monarchians to be just misunderstood modalists but I just don't believe this is the case. As a one God believer, only Jesus' full diety and virgin birth are acceptable.
In conclusion its important for all who call upon the name of Christ to understand what happened in the beginning and see how the truth was slowly but surely subverted and exchanged for lies that cannot profit. The jews who received the truth believed God was absolutely one, the early gentile believers believed God was absolutely one and then slowly mans philosophy creeped in so by the the end of the 3rd century we have three Gods dressed up as one. Its time to get back to what the apostles believed and preached because as we can see from this book it surely wasn't a pagan trinity.

What's the point in writing this book?

His arguments are extraordinarily weak and inconsistent at best and the author is profoundly double-minded....At least the writing is consistent with his belief system, which is apologetic for even mentioning oneness. I didn't want to read the book after the first chapter because of the double tongue.
I will give two examples that perfectly exemplify the entire book.
1. He states that the majority of the common people believed in the oneness doctrine. In the same breath of thought, he says that TPTB wrote trinity into the bible to appease the common people. What???
2.. He admits that there are NO documents that can substantiate/verify anything he is saying and that most of the information he is presenting comes from the trinity advocates (the enemy of oneness) or extra-biblical and unverifiable sources. In the same breath and throughout, he says that ONLY the bible is to be trusted and that ONLY the bible is the inerrant, infallible, and inspired Word of God.
Here is what JESUS said in Matthew 28:19
"Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit."
What is so difficult to understand...if it's what Jesus said to do, then why do we feel we need to massage it in any other way....
