A GraveTells Review: Intimate and visceral, RotA will keep you glued to the pages!

The characters in this series are always standouts. Each one is unique and not at all cookie-cutter. While there are some, like Micah, who play a fairly prominent role in every book (I think of him as the AKM shepherd), it's unusual for me to like and identify with EVERY featured couple across a book series. The first time Malek and Gina are reunited in RotA is a powerful scene and exquisitely written. You can practically feel his aggression and possessive instincts vibrating off the pages, and the shock and bewilderment of their unwitting audience is priceless. The writing is so passionate it gifts the scene with a striking, visceral feel. RotA bristles with emotional intensity and charms with its soul-deep love story. The highs are steamy as hell, and almost manic, while the lows are unbearably intimate and earth-shattering.
There are so many memorable scenes that tugged at my heart strings, but one in particular stood out as exceptionally moving. I won't tell you what it is because I don't want to spoil it, but I must have read it five times. The closeness and boundless, selfless friendship and loyalty Ms. Lynne pulls from her characters is just exquisite, and one of the reasons this series is so increasingly habit forming. Another scene is brutally satisfying in its relentless revenge, even for someone as squeamish as I am about bodily mutilation, especially since it's the good guys who get to dish it out and for good reason. If you have not yet started this series, you simply must!
Donya Lynne is a ruthless storyteller, in the best possible way, and the AKM books just keep getting better. Even if you know how events will ultimately end up (this is PNR, folks, a happily-ever-after ending ain't exactly a state secret), the story takes you on such a complex, well-crafted emotional ride, you can dive into the story and completely immerse yourself in the deep friendships, loyalty and camaraderie, the passion and despair that are so intimately penned.
If you've been waiting for the next Black Dagger Brotherhood, this is it, but with a story arc and featured characters that stand on their own merit and writing that is as complicated and talented as J.R. Ward's without the abrasive, almost gangster style. I dare you to read Return of the Assassin and remain completely unmoved by the events in this book. And to think, this series has so much potential awesome left to explore!
New to the series? Start with Rise of the Fallen and meet the infamous and incorrigible Micah. *Grin*

I love the AKM series!!!! I first fell in love with Micah & Sam in Rise of the Fallen & my love for the characters blossoms with each new book. Gina & Malek's story did not disappoint. I thought you couldn't get a more screwed up male than Micah in the full swing of his Suffering, but Malek hits all new levels of dark, debauched & damaged when he denies his tie to Gina. Gina is also a shadow of herself with a past that is enough to bring even Micah to his knees with respect for her & her struggles.
Between the new additions to AKM & the return of Brak I am waiting with angst for the next book.

Another Winner winner chicken dinner!!!

As an established fan of Donya-Lynn's work I have to say I have been looking forward to this next installment for a while. After purchasing ROTA (a few days earlier than anticipated!) I did what I do best. I apologized to my husband and the kids for being absent for the next 48 hours and locked myself away with my "New release survival kit" (tissues, wine, various food choices and my Laptop). Now I will admit I did read the book twice. Just to make sure in my excitement that I didn't miss anything. And so after a reading marathon...I give you...My review.
The Good (GREAT!)
One of my favorite things about this series and the way Donya Lynne writes is that she brings out the hard core subjects that are very real life issues and does so with compassion and understanding. some of these things in previous books include things like physical abuse, drug addiction, homophobia, and the loss of a spouse (or mate). This story is no different as we see the two main character's struggling with their past and letting go. I connected with Gina (the leading lady) on a deeper level than the other's in this series because she and I have very similar experiences. Without giving to much away *slight spoilers* where as Malek was dealing with the loss of his first mate Gina was dealing with the devastating experiences of domestic violence. her internal dialogue as a survivor and the guilt was very much (for me) spot on. The healing for both of them seemed genuine and very much organic in that they didn't just jump in but had to have help from an outside party.
I also loved the bevy of new character's that we meet in this novel and look forward to learning more about them in this world.
grammar and spelling were not (as far as I could see) an issue and she didn't use the over used cliché's that I have seen so much of lately (no one's womb clenched and liquid heat was not an issue...thank God.)
The Criticism (my one wish)
The one and only thing for me that I do wish had been included was a possible trigger warning about the discussion of rape and abuse. Nothing that was written was horrid and overly explicit and it was needed in this story and done with grace. Maybe something in the books blurb. And that is pretty much it for the criticism I have for this book.
I will absolutely recommend this to friends.
