Kozol (Savage Inequalities) began visiting New York's South Bronx in 1993, focusing on Mott Haven, a poor neighborhood that is two thirds Hispanic, one third black. This disquieting report graphically portrays a world where babies are born to drug-using mothers with AIDS, where children are frequently murdered, jobs are scarce and a large proportion of the men are either in prison or on crack cocaine or heroin. Kozol interviewed ministers, teachers, drug pushers, children who have not yet given up hope. His powerfully understated report takes us inside rat-infested homes that are freezing in winter, overcrowded schools, dysfunctional clinics, soup kitchens. Rejecting what he calls the punitive, blame-the-poor ideology that has swept the nation, Kozol points to systemic discrimination, hopelessness, limited economic opportunities and New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani's cutbacks in social services as causes of this crisis. Alicea and Kozol paint a vivid portrait of life in one of America's most impoverished neighborhoods, New York City's South Bronx. While telling similar stories, each narrative has its own unique flavor and characteristics that reveal the crushing nature of poverty in America and recount the lives of those who rise above it. Kozol (Savage Inequalities, LJ 9/15/91) describes a neighborhood ravaged by drugs, violence, hunger, AIDS, and antipathy but also one where children defy all the stereotypes. In the South Bronx, where the median income is $7600 a year and everything breaks down, Kozol reveals that the one thing that has remained resilient is the children. One of the resident children is 15-year-old Alicea, who saw his mother and sister succumb to AIDS, a father incarcerated in prison, and friends entrapped by drugs or violence. Like that of many children, his story is a life of options or despair. The path they pursue is dependent on government leadership. When Kozol began to write about the lives of poor people in Death at an Early Age (1967), it was possible to believe Americans wanted to do right by the nation's children, even poor children and children of color; this faith now seems naive. In Amazing Grace, families like those whose Manhattan welfare hotels Kozol described in Rachel and Her Children (1988) have been relocated by the city to the South Bronx, which is--with neighboring Harlem and Washington Heights--" one of the largest racially segregated concentrations of poor people in our nation," and Kozol himself seems near despair ("I have never lived through a time as cold as this in the United States" ). Kozol spent a year wandering through Mott Haven and its neighboring communities; visiting churches, schools, hospitals, parks, and homes; talking with parents and kids, social workers, religious leaders, and principals and teachers; struggling to understand how these children and parents cope with destitution and violence and how their fellow citizens can tolerate--even demand--policies that guarantee misery and death for those living a few subway stops north of glitzy midtown Manhattan. Perhaps nothing can halt the juggernaut of resurgent social Darwinism, but, if anything can, it may be Kozol's prophetic vision and the openness and humanity of the remarkable people whose amazing grace he so eloquently describes. Amazing Children

This book is richly intense with the tragic conversations of daily life from residents of South Bronx, New York. The book does not over dramatize life's realities. It gives the reader an honest view of reality of the lives of many children and adults that somehow go beyond surviving their rigorous obstacles of their environment. It does not describe life in a third world country nor the lives of people that lived in another century. It discusses the present day lives of children and their families. Kozol embarked in a journey of interviews and conversations that did not merely describe the mundane lives of residents from the South Bronx. In his writing he does not overwhelm the reader withhis own personal opinions regarding the political arena that keeps the poor at risk residents, poor and at risk. On the contrary, he brings voices to life in a manner that is respectful and validates those that take the time to share their story. I am not proficient in the art of interviewing nor in the degree of listening that Kozol takes to truly present these stories honestly. He shares exactly what is presented to him. I was impressed with his own self acknowledgment of how these stories and experiences have changed his own perspective of people and their sturggle for daily survival. The stories are from children, mothers and grandmothers who have ended up living in the neighborhoods of South Bronx. The neighborhoods visited are described as grotesquely infested with gangs, drugs, prostitution and homicide. Yet, in the middle of these illicit activities, there are sanctuaries that share in protecting children of the community. Amazingly these children show a strong sense of hope and caring that touches the heart of those around them. Their resilience is remarkable and encouraging. It should motivate us to listen more and honor the many stories children carry with them everyday.

Jonathan Kozol's Amazing Grace is an enlightening, non-fiction account of life in the South Bronx. To write this book, Kozol visited to the area hundreds of times, speaking with and establishing relationships with residents as well as exploring, and getting to know the area himself. The final product is a compilation of conversations with some amazing people and his own thoughts and reflections, beautifully woven together. This book addresses numerous social issues effecting New York's poorest areas including violence, poverty, unemployment, drug addiction, HIV/AIDS, inadequate schools, orphaned children, and deplorable living conditions.

Kozol's account was more two sided than I expected it to be. He did a good job of presenting both sides of the issues fairly, leaving it up to the reader to form their own opinion. I personally finished the book feeling guilty for living my privileged life with no regard for what is going on in other parts of the country and anxious for answers. How did these areas become so dismal and life so hopeless? What can be done to fix the situation? Why hasn't someone, anyone, done something to prevent or fix it? Who's fault is it? Looking back, I believe that this sort of reaction was Kozol's purpose in writing this book. He wanted to show America what is going on in poor urban areas, like the South Bronx, in hopes that they will then move to change.

The passage that struck me most was part of a conversation Kozol had with a reverend in the South Bronx who explained that she thinks if New York were a "Judeo-Chrisitan city," people would "be asking questions all the time" such as, "Do I need this bottle of expensive perfume more than a child needs a doctor or a decent school?" (Kozol 223). When I read this line, I was struck with an immense feeling of guilt. I've bought countless bottles of expensive perfume, but have never considered that the money I'm spending on perfume could save a child who is suffering less than an hour from my own home.

Book = Biblical History (i.e. World created 4004BC)

Just want to make sure prospective buyers are aware that this book takes a strict Biblical perspective and starts world history at 4004 BC. If you are ok with that, then this book does a good job of graphically presenting events from that point forward. However, if you take the view that the world is 4 billion years old and that human evolution pre-dates 4004 BC (not to mention the evolution of other current and extinct species), then you probably want to look for a different book.

I love this charming Victorian timeline (updated).

I love this charming timeline of world history. All of my kids loved it as well.

Be aware that it is rooted in the Victorian era, so it is oriented around the "great man" theory of history. It's also not a serious academic resource for what was going on in Africa or the middle east over the centuries.

There are other timelines more in sync with today's approaches, but probably not one this charming. I can see cutting the long stiff paper out of the book and using it as a border in a child's bedroom.

This book is in the cataagory of my prized knowledge tools. To be able to view the easy to read chart and visualize what has happened around the globe at any given time frame is priceless. Couldn't Put This Book Down!

"Something New" by Janis Thomas is one of the best books I've read in 2013. And I read a lot! Hilarious, extremely well-written and so relatable, "Something New" captures the feelings, thoughts and desires of a 40 something year old woman on the cusp of major change. Having kids, being a wife and trying to figure out the next stage of our lives is something most moms think about, and I tore through this book dying to see what Ellen would do (and write) next. I absolutely loved this book and would recommend it to anyone looking for a laugh out loud read with an inspiring and authentically flawed main character.

Fantastic Read!

I thought Something New was a fantastic book. It was funny and thoughtful. It read more like non-fiction because it reminded me of how crazy life is for most wives and mothers. Ellen is typical of a mother/wife in personal crisis! As we read about her journey, alot of us can relate to her state of mind. I loved this book and can't wait for her next!!

From an outsider's perspective, Ellen Ivers has the ideal life. But as she's approaching her forty third birthday, she's realizing that her life has become a bit stale. Yes, she has a husband and kids who love her but she craves more. She decides that a personal reinvention is necessary. She starts watching what she eats, exercising more and even doing things she never thought she would. When her cousin convinces her to enter a blog contest, Ellen was hesitant at first, but thought … what the heck? Not knowing what to blog about was stressing her out. But when she starts blogging about what’s going on in her life, it becomes therapeutic for her. It also doesn’t hurt that no one knows that it’s her behind the penname SomethingNewAt42. So it allows her the freedom of being honest without the concern of being caught!

When a hot piece of meat moves into the area, aka Ben Campbell, the local moms go into sexual over-drive! But to Ellen’s surprise, it’s her that Ben has his sights on. No matter that they are both married, Ellen can’t deny that having this hot, new guy giving her attention does wonders for her ego and self-esteem. But when their friendship starts to grow beyond friends, Ellen starts to wonder if the grass really is greener on the other side. Is she willing to throw away the family she loves and the comforts of home for this stranger who is suddenly giving her the attention that she so craves?

I can’t even begin to express how much I loved this book! As a woman who is about to turn the big 4-0 this year, I can relate to Ellen’s need to spice up her life a bit and also make some personal changes. I felt that the book was well written, relatable and the humor was one point! I love, love, loved this book and recommend it to any woman who has ever wished that her life could be a bit different. Another amazing book by Janis Thomas.

About the Author
Tapan Gupta, Ph.D is chief materials scientist at Radiation Monitoring Devices, a government-funded research organization. He served as senior development engineer at SIPEX and RSM and was Rotary Foundation Scholar at Zenith Radio Corporation.

About the Author

Mark C. Elliott is the Mark Schwartz Professor of Chinese and Inner Asian History in the Department of East Asian Langauges and Civilizations at Harvard University.  Professor Elliott's interest in East Asia began at Yale, where he earned his BA (History, 1981) and MA (East Asian Studies, 1983). After several years of study and archival research in Taiwan, the PRC, and Japan, he earned his PhD from the University of California, Berkeley in 1993, specializing in the history of the last imperial dynasty, the Qing. A leading figure in what is sometimes called the "New Qing History," he is among the very few historians in the United States trained in the use of Manchu-language sources, upon which his first book, The Manchu Way: The Eight Banners and Ethnicity in Late Imperial China (Stanford, 2001) is largely based.   He is  currently at work on a new book examining the connections between the Manchu empire and modern China.

Concise and entertaining, excellent resource for teachers

This highly entertaining and compact book is by far the best overview on Qing, China for teaching. Elliott is masterful in taking a seemingly dull topic (I am typically not a big fan of late imperial China) and bringing it to life in a non-intimidating way. This book uses the backdrop of a biography of the Qianlong emperor to map out everything you need to know about the 18th century (Qianlong reigned over sixty years), including summarizing for a general audience the major debates in the field. There are no characters in this book and explains for the layperson on how to pronounce many of the Chinese names used. The back has an annotated bibliography for further reading. (Good for qualifying exam preparation!)

Everything from ritual life, to population growth and domestic politics, to trade, to the tribute system and Qing China in the world, and the British, is discussed in here, along with lots of little stories (good for attention-grabbing in lecture) and exciting new research in the field. For example, there's detailed discussion of the emperor's extensive imperial tours in China, the relationship with his wives, Qing consolidation of borders and border conflicts (including Tibet and Xinjiang), and discussion of Qianlong's obsession in preserving Manchu ways of life (clothing, language, hunting, martial skills, etc). There's also a great map for teaching Qing China borders (not that different from the current Chinese borders, minus Mongolia and Taiwan) with a map of the US overlaying it. Visually, one can see that the two countries are approximately the same size. Fascinating stuff to use for lecture!

A Good Introduction

This book is at best a good introduction to the Qianlong emperor's reign. Whole books have been written about several aspects of the reign. The author himself mentions Perdue's book on the Qing conquest of central Asia (which I've bought but not had time to read). Alan Peyrifitte has written _ The Immobile Empire _ about the MacCartney mission (which I did read and heartily recommend). This book includes many paintings by Catiglione who's another topic in his own right. So, as I said, it's at best a good introduction to the period. But it does do that very well and even includes very topical information.
By far the most moving aspect of the book was the portrayal of the emperor's personal life, such as his lifelong grief over the death of his first wife, or his doting on his last daughter. It shows yet again that these people were indeed people with loves and losses of their own.

A very good book, fleshed out with loads of interesting detail and broad context which helps to put things in perspective, especially against major events in western history. I also like the fact that it is well organized, so it can serve as a quick reference book as well as a relaxing and engaging read. Not a mean feat for what some may consider to be a dry subject.

A GraveTells Review: Intimate and visceral, RotA will keep you glued to the pages!

The characters in this series are always standouts. Each one is unique and not at all cookie-cutter. While there are some, like Micah, who play a fairly prominent role in every book (I think of him as the AKM shepherd), it's unusual for me to like and identify with EVERY featured couple across a book series. The first time Malek and Gina are reunited in RotA is a powerful scene and exquisitely written. You can practically feel his aggression and possessive instincts vibrating off the pages, and the shock and bewilderment of their unwitting audience is priceless. The writing is so passionate it gifts the scene with a striking, visceral feel. RotA bristles with emotional intensity and charms with its soul-deep love story. The highs are steamy as hell, and almost manic, while the lows are unbearably intimate and earth-shattering.

There are so many memorable scenes that tugged at my heart strings, but one in particular stood out as exceptionally moving. I won't tell you what it is because I don't want to spoil it, but I must have read it five times. The closeness and boundless, selfless friendship and loyalty Ms. Lynne pulls from her characters is just exquisite, and one of the reasons this series is so increasingly habit forming. Another scene is brutally satisfying in its relentless revenge, even for someone as squeamish as I am about bodily mutilation, especially since it's the good guys who get to dish it out and for good reason. If you have not yet started this series, you simply must!

Donya Lynne is a ruthless storyteller, in the best possible way, and the AKM books just keep getting better. Even if you know how events will ultimately end up (this is PNR, folks, a happily-ever-after ending ain't exactly a state secret), the story takes you on such a complex, well-crafted emotional ride, you can dive into the story and completely immerse yourself in the deep friendships, loyalty and camaraderie, the passion and despair that are so intimately penned.

If you've been waiting for the next Black Dagger Brotherhood, this is it, but with a story arc and featured characters that stand on their own merit and writing that is as complicated and talented as J.R. Ward's without the abrasive, almost gangster style. I dare you to read Return of the Assassin and remain completely unmoved by the events in this book. And to think, this series has so much potential awesome left to explore!

New to the series? Start with Rise of the Fallen and meet the infamous and incorrigible Micah. *Grin*

I love the AKM series!!!! I first fell in love with Micah & Sam in Rise of the Fallen & my love for the characters blossoms with each new book. Gina & Malek's story did not disappoint. I thought you couldn't get a more screwed up male than Micah in the full swing of his Suffering, but Malek hits all new levels of dark, debauched & damaged when he denies his tie to Gina. Gina is also a shadow of herself with a past that is enough to bring even Micah to his knees with respect for her & her struggles.
Between the new additions to AKM & the return of Brak I am waiting with angst for the next book.

Another Winner winner chicken dinner!!!

As an established fan of Donya-Lynn's work I have to say I have been looking forward to this next installment for a while. After purchasing ROTA (a few days earlier than anticipated!) I did what I do best. I apologized to my husband and the kids for being absent for the next 48 hours and locked myself away with my "New release survival kit" (tissues, wine, various food choices and my Laptop). Now I will admit I did read the book twice. Just to make sure in my excitement that I didn't miss anything. And so after a reading marathon...I give you...My review.

The Good (GREAT!)

One of my favorite things about this series and the way Donya Lynne writes is that she brings out the hard core subjects that are very real life issues and does so with compassion and understanding. some of these things in previous books include things like physical abuse, drug addiction, homophobia, and the loss of a spouse (or mate). This story is no different as we see the two main character's struggling with their past and letting go. I connected with Gina (the leading lady) on a deeper level than the other's in this series because she and I have very similar experiences. Without giving to much away *slight spoilers* where as Malek was dealing with the loss of his first mate Gina was dealing with the devastating experiences of domestic violence. her internal dialogue as a survivor and the guilt was very much (for me) spot on. The healing for both of them seemed genuine and very much organic in that they didn't just jump in but had to have help from an outside party.

I also loved the bevy of new character's that we meet in this novel and look forward to learning more about them in this world.
grammar and spelling were not (as far as I could see) an issue and she didn't use the over used cliché's that I have seen so much of lately (no one's womb clenched and liquid heat was not an issue...thank God.)

The Criticism (my one wish)

The one and only thing for me that I do wish had been included was a possible trigger warning about the discussion of rape and abuse. Nothing that was written was horrid and overly explicit and it was needed in this story and done with grace. Maybe something in the books blurb. And that is pretty much it for the criticism I have for this book.

I will absolutely recommend this to friends.
