An extraordinary survey of modernism

Joseph Boone's queer reading of modernism is quite extraordinary, not only in terms of analytical innovation but also in the breadth of his survey. He begins his study in a very unusual place, with Bronte's Villette, and moves all the way to Doris Lessing. As with any good study of modernism, the big names of Joyce, Woolf, and Faulkner are included. It is a strictly English examination, so Proust doesn't appear. While all of his observations on the subject are quite illuminating, I think his most penetrating study is of Djuna Barnes's Nightwood. It is an extremely rich, dense, and difficult text, and I think Mr. Boone should be applauded for his eloquent and insightful handling of such esoteric material. I consider it a must have for any student interested in the study of sexuality in literature. For those of you that fall under that banner and are specifically interested in modernism, you should obtain a copy as soon as possible.
