Henry Kissinger are sometimes more beautifully written, this memoir is always clear

This is a memoir more than a history. Where memoirs of, say, Henry Kissinger are sometimes more beautifully written, this memoir is always clear, concise, honest and pointed, like Harry Truman himself. There is a touch of anti-Republican partisanship and even some excessive modesty, both of which accurately reflect the voice of Harry Truman himself. Since the book was written for Truman's contemporaries, the book will be most enjoyed by students of the history of the time, who are familiar with the players like Taft, Vandenburg, and Eisenhower, but the book is accessible enogh to be very enjoyable to almost anyone.

I read the book. Tempted to stop there and let my five-star rating speak for me, but this volume deserves more. It's insightful, well-written, and captures both a moment in history and a perspective that many tend to overlook. Highly recommended.

Required reading for anyone who discusses current affairs

This book is an amazing insight into history. So much of our modern world was determined at this time. Parts of the book are too long and detailed on matters that have become of little historic consequence, therefore some chapters can be skipped. However, other parts, including the Korean War, the creation of Israel, the creation of the United Nations and the beginning of the cold war are outstanding. His relationships with Eisenhower and MacArthur are also excellent. Truman does not discuss the White House renovation, the assassination attempt, or the insider financial scandal of his administration. This book is required reading for any student of 20th century history or anyone who claims to understand our current world. There are some uncanny parallels with 2014. My opinion of Truman has risen greatly.
