Genius in print

Truly a work of "genius"--a film by that title is supposed to be in production at this moment, starring Jude Law as the author, in the process of publishing this seminal work of prose. This book is very long, the unabridged version of what the film will no doubt depict being whittled down by editor Max Perkins to a book we know as "Look Homeward Angel."
I honestly have not finished the book. I am not an avid novel reader, but a writer who goes through a lot of nonfiction, news etc. "O Lost" reaches almost a philosophical level of language use. There are passages within the first 100 pages that surpass just about anything I have ever read, and it serves well as a trusty tome to prime the mind for good writing. It originally came to my attention out of idle interest because I went to college in his hometown, the setting of this book. But this is not a Jan Karon or Mayberry, or even Mark Twain styled depiction of southern life. It's more of a timeless statement about the genius inside of people who we otherwise know only externally. It's not a fluffed up saga of artificial intrigue and family drama, but a brilliantly detailed fictional narrative partly based on his own childhood, weaving in every bit of worldly wisdom and transcendent insights on the human condition that could possibly fit. One could say its power comes from the fact that its main story acts almost as a vehicle, a surface layer, while the depth of the author's thoughts are always felt beneath each line of dialogue.

Awesome Original Version of an American Classic

I'm on a Wolfe binge, and this original manuscript is SO great! I'm having the same thrill I had reading Kerouac's original On The Road...so much better than what was originally published. Incredible. Highly recommend.

Look Homeward Angel is better

Just comparing the first chapter, the unedited version, "O Lost" is kind of amateurish. It reads like adolescent fiction. The edited version that was published as "Look Homeward Angel" in the 1930s is more artistic and has a great atmosphere which "O Lost" lacks, IMHO. I am happy to own "O Lost", but I do not think Thomas Wolfe would have been taken seriously if his work did not have a good editor.
