Needed a case study approach for Ora Fin. A long way to go.

Oracle Financials implementation is not a trivial task. It is a major cost for any organizations' IT department. This books tries to break the ice on Oracle Finacials compiled information. It is the only book that exists in the field of Oracle Financials. The enormity of this tasks makes it impossible to club all the knowledge one would expect from a handbook. However, it does try to be insightful for ar modules as opposed to explanation of other modules. It is the courage of the authors to delve on such an elusive topic that deserves a special mention. What we need for an implementation is case studies with very particular code specific to that situation. I guess for each module in Oracle finacials one could write a book and that is what is required. Or if we try to slice and dice it from different perspective. Let us assume we try to categorize it from Industry line perspective. One for Energy kind of industry, one for production kind of industry, and so on the classification will become endless what is required is the process identification in a business ( for instance invoicing, billing) and then trying to explain the best practices and implementation for that process. The purpose of this book is introduction to Financials and a brief outlook at each module and project management. I think we need a module-detailed book with processes implementation.

Worth Reading Once

I must appreciate the efforts of David and Graham to come out with such a book. Those who are used to read Oracle Apps Help and other documentation may not find some thing appealing. The authors have tried to mix functional concepts and some technical info with practical Do's and Don'ts. So may be they are not able to satisfy both to the fullest. This obviously is not possible in single book (in first edition too). Still I would expect the authors to include more of Tips that are not documented and extend the content to include manufacturing, HR and CRM to meants meant for Oracle Applications. This book is definitely worth reading once for all levels of professionals !

I GOT THE JOB

I was apprehensive at first buying a book to prepare me for a police oral board but the book helped me so much. I did a bit more research online, reading articles and asking questions of former and current police officers. I don't know what the underlying reason is for me getting offered the job, but the Chief just called like 10 minutes ago and I got the job. It was my first and only police application. So all I can say is, the book helped because I'm not from a military background or anything like that, but I beat out over 30 other applicants.

Great Prep for Both Local and Federal LE Oral Boards

While this book was intended for Police oral boards, I highly recommend getting this book if you have a Special Agent/Criminal Investigator (1811) or any other Federal LE oral board coming up if you have never been through one before. It is a quick read (1-2 hours), but gives the foundation you need to get some of the pass/fail law enforcement-based questions that frequently blindside candidates.

Read this at the very beginning of your prep, then again a time or two before the oral board. This should get you at least 30% prepared; the rest is knowing the department, position, your qualifications, and other normal interview stuff which the book touches on as well. Being prepared for the questions will help you save enough time to be able to sell yourself to the board before your time is up.

I purchased this book four years ago while still in the police academy. After graduation, I extensively studied the materials inside this book and was able to land a job with a very desirable agency. The questions they asked me during the oral board interview had all been covered in this book, so I felt prepared and delivered excellent responses.

When I first began making the transition from UNIX device drivers to those for Windows NT, there weren't a lot of available resources to help me along. However, things have changed over the past couple of years, and there is now plenty of information, including articles in Dr. Dobb's Journal and Microsoft Systems Journal, Paula Tomlinson's "Understanding NT" column in Windows Developer's Journal, Microsoft Developer Network, the Microsoft web site, and various other resources on the Internet. However, the place I recommend you start is with Windows NT Device Driver Development, by Peter G. Viscarola and W. Anthony Mason.

Windows NT Device Driver Development is a well-organized, easy to read, and complete introduction to NT device driver development. It could be read cover to cover as a student text. Because of its clean layout, the book is as valuable a reference as any of the resources listed above.

About the Author
Peter G. Viscarola is a founder of, and Consulting Partner at, Open Systems Resources (OSR), the world-renowned consulting firm specializing in Windows NT systems internals. During more than 20 years in the computer industry, including more than 10 years as an independent consultant, Peter has developed device drivers and protocol implementations under a wide array of operating systems. Since the release of Windows NT, Peter has designed or developed more than three dozen Windows NT drivers, including drivers for almost every type of programmed I/O and DMA device imaginable. Recent Windows NT driver projects include development of high-speed drivers for ATM[r], ISDN, and Frame Relay devices, as well as design of special Kernel mode drivers for a number of unique situations. Peter's particular areas of expertise include networking and high-speed DMA architectures, where hardware-driver interactions are critical. Peter has a long background developing and teaching hig! h-tech courses, and is the developer and chief instructor of Open Systems Resources Windows NT Kernel Mode Device Driver Seminar. Peter attended Columbia University and the University of Michigan, where he studied applied statistics and computer science, and Lesley College, where he studied applied management. Peter is a regular contributor to and columnist for The NT Insider, Open Systems Resources journal of Windows NT systems internals. He is a Senior Member of the IEEE and a voting member of the ACM.

W. Anthony Mason is an Open Systems Resources Consulting Partner with experience in a wide array of system software disciplines during the past 16 years. i've looked at several books for windows device drivers, and this book is by far the best. It explains the 'why' instead of just pushing out examples with no explanation. Also, it's written by the osr group. in my opinion, the osr group consists of the real experts on windows device driver development. i would highly recommend this book. also, in my personal opinion, i found it to be far superior to the official windows books which are over $100 each.

This book is VERY well written and VERY readable. I needed other sources to get an actual driver written (see Chris Cant's book) but only because this book gives a much more complete picture and I needed something more specific. That's my point...if you want a good, solid understanding of the system and an excellent reference, get this book. It's not often one finds technical-minded people with such writing skill.

I bought this book as amazon recommendation. I'd heard and read a lot about war and concentration camps especially Auscwitz The thing that surprised me about this camp is that it was not only Jewsish woman but I won't go too much into detail you HAVE to read this book. For anyone that says this never happened read these ladies stories. They had so much courage I couldn't read it some days as the stories and what they went through was horrible but thank you Sarah thank you for keeping their stories alive

A very important book

Book review for "Asteroid Mining 101"

The book itself is high quality and has clear, easy to read text and many color illustrations.

The book is a follow-up of Mr. Lewis's earlier book "Mining the Sky" but the information here is much more complete, updated to what is known in 2014, and is much more technical. It would be extremely useful, for example, for politicians, investors, or business executives needing to quickly understand the basis for the recent interest and practicality of asteroid mining.

I have bachelor's degrees in applied physics and computer science and it took me about a week to read this book, spending a few hours a night on it. I enjoyed it very much and I will probably read it 2 or 3 more times just to be sure that I understand everything because there is a lot in it to take in. To get the most out of this book I recommend you read Mr. Lewis's other book, "Mining the Sky", first, especially if you don't have a background in science. I did not see any factual errors in the book and it is obvious Mr. Lewis knows the material and has done a lot of quality research bringing this information together.

Once I started to understand the ideas presented in "Mining the Sky" and then in this book, I realized that we (the human race) need to go to space as soon as we possibly can. To me, the human race is similar to a crowd of bored, starving people standing on a sidewalk fighting over a few dried up grains of rice (energy and resources on Earth) who don't realize that all they have to do is turn around and cross a moderately busy street to get to an all you can eat 5 star steak house giving away food for free (the asteroids and comets and other resources in our solar system). Mr. Lewis has given us the tools to pass the biggest IQ test of all time with his books on asteroid mining. In my opinion, Mr. Lewis deserves a Nobel peace prize or at the very least a statue of him made from all of the platinum in the M type asteroid 16 Psyche. Elon Musk said that he started SpaceX and wants to go to Mars because he thinks a future where humans go into space will be much more interesting than one which it doesn't. I agree with him and I would add my own corollary to his statement: humans living in a future where humans don't go into space ultimately have no hope. Probably 90% or more of the problems this world has are political problems, wars, acts of oppression, etc. that are traced back to competition for resources and energy. Mr. Lewis has done a very good job of showing that it doesn't have to be that way because there are enough resources in our solar system to support a population and economy millions of times bigger than what we have now. If we just grow up, start doing a little more long term planning, start believing that we can do this, stop saying it is too hard or too expensive, and put our minds to it so that we can go to space and our future really will be far more interesting.

This book gives me hope.

good book with some annoying flaws

The good news: this is a very informative book about an interesting topic that's been getting a lot of attention recently. It has lots of useful material, and is potentially a valuable reference on the topic. I'm glad to have it on my shelf.
The bad news comes in several parts, individually minor but rather irritating in combination.
Most obviously, the production quality is amateurish, and it's obvious that nobody proofread the final text -- in particular, there are occasional chunks of repeated text and other sloppiness. The tables are printed in a hideous color-on-black format more suited to projection slides than to book pages. The pages with large color illustrations have a strong tendency to curl.
More fundamentally, the book suffers from a common problem: it can't decide whether it wants to be a reference or a gentle introduction, and so it doesn't fully succeed at being either. The introductory material is pretty decent, but the reader seeking only an overview of the topic will have to skip lightly over the blizzard of detail on some topics; the book does at least relegate some of the deeper detail to a long appendix. The reference material falls prey to the temptation to talk about things that seem interesting while sometimes skipping fundamentals -- for example, there is discussion of the composition of the metallic portion of many meteorite types, but seldom any mention of HOW MUCH is metallic in each type.
THERE IS NO INDEX. This is inexcusable in a reference, and a serious defect even in an introduction.
Finally, although the book claims to have been published at the end of last year, it was obviously mostly written a couple of years earlier. The Chelyabinsk meteor is discussed but had clearly only just happened, and the Asteroid Retrieval Mission is mentioned only as the original Keck Institute study. Updates on both would have been appropriate, given more recent developments.
For anyone seriously interested in the subject, this book is well worth having. But be prepared to grit your teeth occasionally.

An Excellent, Easy to Read Primer That Sets The Stage For Asteroid Mining

In Asteroid Mining 101: Wealth for the New Space Economy Dr. John Lewis presents a cogent, relatively easy to read guide to what is possible within the next few decades. The primary focus is on the locations, orbits, behavior and composition of asteroids, including recent information in this evolving science. These are fundamental to conceiving techniques and innovating methods to catch, capture, and extract the resources they can provide for the exploration and exploitation of space by the human race.

Although he does not go into depth on the engineering aspects of mining asteroids, beneficiation, etc., he is careful to note that these, too, will require new approaches that will differ significantly from terrestrial mining practices. Similarly, post processing manufacturing methods are sketchy, although an impressive graphic for an "Asteroid Processing Architecture" is provided and is well thought out. Perhaps in a follow on book the details of that architecture will be presented more clearly with proposals for engineering the equipment necessary to carry the process to fruition. It goes without saying that these processes will require either a vessel(s) or facility/ies in orbit or on the moon with the capabilities to perform them.

The driver for asteroid mining, and other planetary or planetoid bodies for that matter, will almost invariably arise from profit motives for private companies rather than government, although I suspect it will evolve as a private-public partnership, particularly given the control governments exercise over launches and air space. Nevertheless, it will be entrepreneurial risk takers who will accelerate the efforts. To that end, Dr. Lewis presents some compelling numbers on the economic value of asteroid mining, especially the contrast between the costs of transporting materials to space from Earth (which right now is approximately $10K per pound according to NASA figures) and the cost of obtaining them from NEAs in the near term.

Mining asteroids and other bodies will be a complex undertaking, but for the sake of humanity's long term future, the first steps encompassed in the book are a necessary and important step toward that goal. Asteroid Mining 101 is an excellent primer that will stretch your mind and, hopefully, your horizons. Well done.

Lacks depth - OK as an overview only

I was fairly disappointed by this book. Having experience in the product development field this offered me nothing new. I would only recommend this book to students who want an introductory book. Even then, the focus seemed more on the product development process and their are many books that cover this topic in greater depth. I didn't see much on how project management can be customized to fit the NPD process.

I have dissappointed with the hard cover book printed in black and white and withh no colored figures and graphics. I think the original of the book should be in colored printed form. So, the copy sent to me seems to be a photocopy. I wouldn't expect such a thing with Amazon.
