Guitar Tone: Pursuing the Ultimate Guitar Sound, by Mitch Gallagher

"Great tone" is a combination of many things--electronic, acoustic, musical, physical, emotional, and cerebral. Each player assembles and manipulates those components into a special blend, creating his own unique sonic stew. So how do we get great tone? The answer for most of us is a lifetime of pursuit that is at once equal parts joyous and frustrating, but always rewarding. A big part of succeeding in that pursuit is having an understanding of what goes into making great tone. That's where this book comes in. GUITAR TONE: PURSUING THE ULTIMATE GUITAR SOUND is the ultimate resource for guitarists searching for not just the "best" tone, but also their own individual sound. This book explores all the gear and examines the approaches famous players take to achieve their distinctive tones. You'll look at vintage and new, boutique and mainstream, modern and retro. Along the way, Guitar Tone attempts to sort out the facts versus the myths versus the opinions and explores how each component contributes to the overall tone of our guitars and other gear. The search for tone may not come to a definitive conclusion for most of us, but that doesn't make the journey any less worth taking. It's not easy to achieve great tone, but the reward--the joy of wallowing in the luscious sound of strings resonating in concert with your musical desires--is a reward greater than any other. Better tone awaits!

An Exceptional and Useful Resource ...
By DACHokie
With over 30 years of guitar playing under my belt, I feel very comfortable working up and down the fret board, but still consider myself technologically "naïve" when it comes to understanding and explaining tone. The trial and error method of changing pickups, string gauges, tunings and adjusting dials of a multitude of stomp boxes has always served me well in developing a tone that I find appealing. But, my lack of fully understanding the dynamics of my amplifiers (solid state vs. tube amplifiers) and even some stomp boxes (overdrive vs. fuzz vs. distortion) is something that has frustrated and even embarrassed me over the years, especially when talking to other guitarists. Mitch Gallagher's GUITAR TONE: PURSUING THE ULTIMATE GUITAR SOUND provided exactly what I've needed (for decades); a simple, but very comprehensive breakdown of virtually everything that makes an electric guitar sound the way it does. I found this book to be an essential "go to" guide that will serve me for years to come and it instantly became a permanent addition to my personal library.

As a musician that prefers to play-by-ear (although I can read music), I have always "felt" my way around developing a guitar tone that suits a particular style of music. While playing notes correctly and in-tune rank high on the list of importance to most players outside Keith Richards, the guitar's tone might just as well be #1 on the list for many guitarists. After all, the tone is arguably the trademark that not only separates the great guitarists, but permanently identifies their iconic status. Many fellow guitarists have spent a great deal of money and time trying to emulate "that sound" of a particular guitar hero (for me, it was the watery twang of Stevie Ray Vaughan or the nasal tone of Jimmy Page's live performances with Zeppelin). While it is easy to assume that simply playing the same equipment (such as Fender Stratocaster for Stevie and a Gibson Les Paul through a Marshall stack for Jimmy) would be the logical first-step, however, this is not always the case. Like snowflakes, no guitar, amp or effect is ever the same (regardless of what the manufactures state) and we all hear things differently. I wonder how many people purchased a Gibson Les Paul or double neck to emulate the tone on the studio version of the "Stairway to Heaven" solo, only to discover Jimmy Page did NOT use a Gibson to record that stellar moment? What Mitch Gallagher does with GUITAR TONE is organize the huge list of factors that affect an electric guitar's tone and explain the how and why aspects of each to better inform the guitarist of what is and isn't important in developing a guitar's tone. From the wood used on the guitar's body to the winding of pickup wire to the shape and material of the guitar pick, Gallagher covers huge ground in a simplified format that I found to be both entertaining and highly educational. GUITAR TONE explains things in great detail, but does not require a degree in electrical engineering to comprehend ... and this is music to my ears.

What separates GUITAR TONE from most everything else I've read is that it serves as a one-stop-shop for all things tone-related ... everything I could think of and much more is covered in this book (Gallagher does not simply cover the obvious). Starting with an introductory definition of guitar tone and why it is important, the book wastes no time before going to the sources of tone, starting with the guitar itself (shape, wood-type, frets, chambers, finish, etc). Subsequent chapters cover everything from strings, cables, speakers, hardware material and a plethora of effects (stomp boxes and multi-effects processors). While the list of material covered is extensive enough to require almost 400 pages, it is very easy to consume. Full of analogies and humor, Gallagher makes the learning process a relatable and enjoyable experience. What is obvious throughout the book is that the author has definitely done the research and knows how to simplify information to a level that most readers will appreciate and understand. Adding to the simplifying process, Gallagher implements at-a-glance boxes throughout GUITAR TONE that summarizes the range of impact the subject matter has on guitar tone, so you guitarists may be a little more knowledgeable before spending an arm and a leg on gold tuners that don't do anything but possibly get your guitar stolen. Additionally, much of the book clarifies myths about things that alter tones ... like the unnecessary decimation of the tortoise population to generate a few guitar picks that are no more functional or cooler-looking than the man-made alternative. Three quarters of the book is dedicated to the items that affect guitar tone and the subject matter is up-to-date (we even get an explanation as to why the feds are hassling the good folks at Gibson guitars the last few months). Good stuff.

The last chapter of the book is dedicated to the tones of various guitar legends themselves. While most all the heavy-hitters are provided, inevitably an issue for some will be those guitarists who weren't highlighted ... the difference being a 400 vs. an 800 page book. The guitar legend section offers rundown of gear and throws in some of the individual idiosyncrasies that make these axe-men so legendary in the first place. Nothing tremendously ground-breaking is revealed, but I found this section of the book both informative and entertaining (like a convenient conglomeration of highlights from guitar magazine articles over the years). If the introduction/explanation of guitar tone and the components of guitar tone serve as the appetizer and entree of this book (respectively), then the section on the artists is the dessert ... a perfect way to complete the meal.

GUITAR TONE is a highly informative book that is presented in a manner that I found to be particularly addictive and fun to read. Mitch Gallagher provides a resource that amplifier or effects pedal manufacturers have continuously failed to provide in their owners' manuals ... useful information. GUITAR TONE has already proven to be a handy tool that allows me to explore my guitar and equipment to hone my tone with more confidence and authority than ever before. Although some graphical content (pictures and/or drawings) would have enhanced the overall presentation, the lack of it does not diminish the book's value. The book fills a niche that has long been needed ... a non-technical explanation of why your guitar sounds the way it does.

Perfect Guitar Tone is Elusive, A Never Ending Journey
By Bob Feeser
I have been playing guitar for over 40 years. I bought a 1966 Telecaster or should I say my parents bought it for me brand new back then; cherry picked it, and I still have it. Oddly enough the Fender Squier Classic Vibe Customs remind me of it in the way it plays and feels but that's fodder for another post.

The author of this book Mitch Gallagher I often see on documentary videos from Sweetwater one of the larger stores. I had no idea that he had such an in depth knowledge of all aspects of the guitar. This book goes into everything and most importantly how it affects tone.

In a popular Tele guitar forum, one of the members has a signature line that reads, "Tone will beat a thousand notes every time". The reason why I mention that tone is elusive is because Mitch says exactly that in the book. He wishes he could say, "Ok use this type of wood, and this particular set of pickups, etc. etc. and get this exact tone". It doesn't work that way. For example even the same wood species is going to vary somewhat. As a matter of fact there can be major tonal differences between wood taken from the same tree based on where from that tree it was taken, how was it sawn, where was it grown. The elusive tone that we seek therefore is a journey. It seems like we are always arriving at that next pickup change, or string type, or installing that bone nut, but as soon as we make the change, there is some further refinement that we seek.

The impressive thing about this book is the in depth knowledge that is provided in each and every aspect of the guitar; how pickups are made yesterday, today, and what new developments have recently been achieved. The different magnet types, Alnico 2, 3, 4, 5 and their tonal variations. Many people feel that the old pickups are better. He explains all of that and also mentions that since they were manually wound there were a lot of variations. Once again, you think that you can put your finger on something, only to realize it slips out from under just as you acquire it.

The other thing that is well covered is what do the guitar greats use, and how do they use it? Did you know that Eric Clapton places a block of wood in his Strat to lock the tremolo bar? What kind of amps did he use? What years did he go use pedal effects, and what years did he just use the maxed out Marshall stacks, and what does he use today? How is his custom shop Strats equipped? All of these things and more are covered, and he includes a lot of the all time best guitar players in there as well, giving each their own section.

If you want to join into the guitar forums, and really be in the know, you want others to realize that you know your stuff, then get this book, read it cover to cover, and then be able to go back in and use it as a desk reference whenever you are deciding on how to do that latest mod. I wish this book had been written a long time ago. Very, very highly recommended.

Update: I do want to add that anyone who criticizes this book because it doesn't have enough pictures can't be a serious guitarist. I found each sentence each paragraph so chock full of interesting information pertinent to my quest for the perfect tone that any concerns of having nice pictures to look at was the last thing on my mind. I don't think there is another person out there who knows even half of what this book has to offer. If you seriously love guitar, and know how crucial good tone is to enjoying it, this book is for you. I'm still pouring over it. It is almost too much to absorb in one reading, and it will be a prominent fixture in my studio for constant reference especially when I am pondering new gear.

Music to your ears?
By Amazon Customer
I have a major issue with the subject of this and similar books, so I'll review the book and then have my rant in the comments.

This book deals with all aspects of guitar tone, and how each part of the guitar and amplifier combo contributes to the sound. From the type of wood used in the body and neck of the guitar, Mitch Gallagher goes through the obvious things like pick-ups and tube/solid-state amps. He goes on to explain things in considerable detail, so you can see how the various parts of the signal chain contribute to your sound.

Each part is explained in easy-to-understand language (there's a whole chapter on things like nuts and bridges, for instance), and I'm sure that even if you're a guitar fan, you'll find something new here.

The last part of the book is a series of more than a dozen chapters dealing with "Icons of Tone" - the guitarists who've shaped our understanding of what the instrument can sound like, over the last almost 50 years. Clapton, Hendrix, Jeff Beck, and others have their gear discussed here - what they used all through their career, not just what they're using now.

For instance, I knew that Jimmy Page was a session guitarist almost 50 years ago, but the chapter on him talks about the guitar he used in that period (a Gibson Les Paul Black Beauty) and even mentions some of the groups he helped out in the recording studio.

Gallagher tries to suggest which parts of the signal chain have the most effect on tone (and probably annoys some people who won't play a guitar made of "the wrong kind" of wood). He even includes a section on "tone is in your fingers" which is an important part of the whole thing. It's a minor pity that there is no CD included or Web site where you could download examples of tone differences - I think it would make things very clear to people who don't have the wealth of experience that Gallagher has.

But this is a small caveat in a book that went further than I expected, and I doubt anyone will find it lacking or incorrect. So, if you want to improve your guitar tone, this is the book to get.

But . . . I've come to the conclusion that searching for "the perfect tone" is a waste of time and money. There is a world of difference between that and "a good tone," and that's what I think people should aim for. See the comments for more on this.

How to customize the delivery of your presentation to almost any audience for "maximum persuasive power"
By Robert Morris
Those who aspire to master several different high-impact communication styles will find the material in this HBR book invaluable. It is one of the volumes in a series of anthologies of articles that first appeared in Harvard Business Review. Authors of the ten articles focus on one or more components of a process by which to pitch a brilliant idea successfully, connect with any audience, establish and then sustain credibility, inspire others to "see" and embrace your vision, adapt to any audience's decision-making style, frame goals around shared interests, build consensus and obtain concessions, and neutralize stressful conversations.

Having read all of the articles when they were published individually, I can personally attest to the brilliance of their authors' (or co-authors') insights and the eloquence with which they are expressed. Two substantial value-added benefits should also be noted: If all of the articles were purchased separately as reprints, the total cost would be at least $60-75; they are now conveniently bound in a single volume for a fraction of that cost.

I now provide two brief excerpts that are representative of the high quality of all ten articles:

In "Change the Way You Persuade," Gary A. Williams and Robert B. Miller identify and discuss five styles of decision making (based on their interviews) and explain the best ways to influence each. They are:

1. Charismatics (25% of those interviewed) are easily enthralled by new ideas. They can absorb large amounts of information rapidly, and they tend to process the world visually.

2. Thinkers (11%) are the most difficult decision makers to understand and consequently the toughest to persuade.

3. Skeptics (19%) are highly suspicious of every single data point, especially any information that challenges their worldview.

4. Followers (36%) make decisions based on how they've made similar choices in the past or on how other trusted executives have made them.

5. Controllers (9%) abhor uncertainty and ambiguity, and they will focus on the pure facts and analytics of an argument. They are both constrained and driven by their own fears and insecurities.

Other articles in this anthology I especially enjoyed include "Harnessing the Science of Persuasion" (Robert B. Cialdini), "Telling Tales" (Stephen Denning), and "Taking the Stress Out of Stressful Conversations" (Holly Weeks)

Some chapters are helpful...
By Saurav B. Prasad
I found two chapters of this book helpful: "The Necessary Art of Persuasion" and "The Five Messages Leaders Must Manage." These chapters offered some key takeaways that will be helpful for new managers. For example, in persuasion, the authors talk about "shared benefits." This is useful to remember when you are managing a team. In the messages chapter, the authors mention the importance of a team leader asking questions, instead of providing answers to the team. Overall, it's a good book to develop inter-personal skills.

The articles in this anthology are brief, but full of useful information. They are useful at any static your career.

Celluloid, by Dave McKean

Erotica for the mind and eye by a comics giant.

A woman arrives at an apartment, but her partner can’t get away from work. She is disappointed and settles in for a night alone, but finds a film projector with a reel of film loaded. The film is scratched and blurry, but she can make out a couple making love. When the film burns out, a door is revealed which leads to a misty town square... and a series of fantastical sexual encounters.

But the plot doesn’t really matter. Celluloid is a rare instance (especially among Anglo-Saxons) of a top-flight cartoonist working within erotic ― even pornographic, to embrace the word ― parameters, with the intent of creating a genuine work of art.

As the artist says: “There are so many comics about violence. I’m not entertained or amused by violence, and I’d rather not have it in my life. Sex, on the other hand, is something the vast majority of us enjoy, yet it rarely seems to be the subject of comics. Pornography is usually bland, repetitive and ugly, and, at most, ‘does the job’. I always wanted to make a book that is pornographic, but is also, I hope, beautiful, and mysterious, and engages the mind.”

Bringing to bear the astonishing range of illustrative and storytelling skills that have served him so well on his collaborations with Neil Gaiman and such solo projects as the (recently re-released) epic graphic novel Cages, Dave McKean forges into new territory with this unique work of erotica. 232 pages of full-color illustrations

Review
The visionary art director behind The Sandman’s covers creates a coital masterwork that elicits beauty and excitement in equal measure.... Celluloid is a treasure of technical finesse and sensual mystique that transcends its potential controversy. (Sean Edgar - Paste)

A decidedly adult erotica graphic novel with no dialogue, this is the famed Sandman cover artist going at page after page of a sexy hallucination, whipped up by a magic porno movie projector. Dreamscapes with boners. (Cyriaque Lamar - io9)

Dave McKean’s art never fails to amaze me... I’ll never look at a fig, a pear, or a red tomatillo the same way again. ...I think this would make a good paper anniversary gift. (Gene Ambaum - The Unshelved Book Club)

Dave McKean Brings Erotica to Graphic Novels
By Count Orlok '22
Dave McKean (the artist behind "Batman: Arkham Asylum" and "Mr. Punch") is one of my favorite modern artists and his comic book works are astonishingly beautiful and haunting. His unique visual sensibility makes this text-less graphic erotica completely original. In terms of wordless graphic novels, I've only read a few and this one is intriguing since it incorporates fantasy elements with reality and with no textual explanation. Like all of his work it is wondrously imaginative and slightly unnerving, yet in a way that is never gratuitously titillating or disturbing, at least not by my own standards.

"Celluloid" is a work of art that creatively explores rather than cheaply exploits human sexuality. Whether it will be viewed as such or not remains to be seen, but this is indeed a groundbreaking effort in a medium that is still perceived by many to be just for kids. To have erotica available within such a medium could be potentially very controversial, but it could also be an important stepping stone along the path to cementing the fact that graphic literature isn't just for children; that it can be artful, complex, and as adult-oriented as any other storytelling media.

The book, which is 232 pages, reads (or views rather, since there is no text) very quickly as a work of erotica should and I found that instead of examining each page and the details of the artwork for a long duration, I went through it quickly. I then read/viewed it again. In some ways, the experience of reading the book was similar to that of watching an old silent film, which may very well have been intentional as McKean has stated numerous times that he loves old European silent films and that they were an early influence on his visual style. (In fact McKean is currently working on an evocative series of multi-media paintings entitled "Nitrate" which are an homage to some of the masterpieces of the early cinema. Some of these paintings have been on display as part of the Nitrate + Kinogeists exhibitions, the catalogs of which can be found here and here.)

The story tells the tale of a woman who becomes disappointed when the man she lives with isn't able to come home and make love to her because he's busy with work. So, she resorts to taking a bath and then pleasuring herself on the sofa. But she ends up finding a film projector and curiosity takes hold of her. As the images begin to explode on the wall she realizes that the film is of a sexual nature but before she can absorb the details of the film the reel burns out and in the place of the projection is a set of ornate doors leading into another world. She walks through them and finds herself in a strange, somewhat eerie, and very sexual fantasia where people make love in public view. The woman comes across numerous film projectors in this strangely sensual world and with each viewing of the film she is transported to another locale where she makes love to a startling vivid and intriguingly bizarre character. During these sexual encounters she makes love to a woman with fourteen breasts and grape vines for hair, a very well endowed demon whom she satiates orally, and then finally a benevolent shadowy figure who emerges from a vulva-like structure in the ceiling.
Meanwhile the woman's lover back in the real world comes home to their apartment and discovers the film projector and plays the reel of film... at which point it is revealed that the couple having sex in the film is the woman he lives with and the shadowy figure. Their eyes lock and the question remains: is this reality or is this a dream? And if so, whose dream is it, his or hers?

Regarding the art, the book encompasses many styles that shift and flow seductively from stylized photography to expressionistic pastel drawings, from colorful surrealist paintings to simplistic sepia-toned illustrations. In fact, from a critical standpoint, some of the pictures are gorgeous and would be welcome additions to modern art museums as stand-alone works.
McKean was smart to label the book as pornography since many of the images are indeed very graphic in their anatomical depictions of sexual behavior ranging from voyeurism to masturbation, from oral sex to intercourse. Despite their vivid imagery and provocative nature, I never found them to be disturbing or vulgar (though others will have a different reaction, I'm sure).

Normally, I have little to no interest in pornography or explicitly graphic erotica (although I do love John Cleland's "Fanny Hill: Memoirs Of A Woman of Pleasure" and the illustrations of French artist Édouard-Henri Avril). But I consider this to be a mature and artistic approach to the subject matter and at no point did it seem to denigrate sexuality, or devolve to purely exploitative depictions of either gender, nor does it wreak of the overtly misogynistic commercialism of more mainstream - if that word can be applied - erotica and pornography. This work isn't exploitative smut to be viewed at with shame. It's a celebratory expression of mutual pleasure; a sensual reverie to be shared.

Either challenging or confusing
By A. KAPLAN
It's great to see a new graphic novel by Dave McKean. He's so well-known as an illustrator and cover artist, but we rarely see his sequential art (and even more rarely illustrating his own stories). Celluloid, told primarily in single-panel pages, is a dream/nightmare-like erotic hallucination, featuring a series of sexual scenes illustrated in a variety of styles. The art is gorgeous, and show McKean as a master at the top of his game.

As for the story... I'm not sure I understood it. I think it's going to take another couple of reads at least. Either I'm missing stuff, or it's just a series of images. (Or maybe both, and I'm just failing to make connections.) I can follow the flow of the story from panel to panel and page to page. I'm just not sure what it all means. (There's nothing wrong with artwork that challenges the reader. I'm just not sure how exactly I'm being challenged.)

So high points for the art, and for the potential of the storytelling, but lower marks for clarity or accessibility.

Relies heavily on intellect and emotion, rather than just arousal and titillation
By GraphicNovelReporter.com
Dave McKean, an artist best known for his work on Batman: Arkham Asylum and frequent collaborations with Neil Gaiman on Sandman and the film MirrorMask, breaks away from the mainstream with Celluloid, a finely-tuned and erotic graphic novel.

Erotica can be a fickle, alienating genre. In American culture, it's generally something to be shied away from, typically in favor of far more obscene acts of violence. Improperly crafted, it can turn away more people than it can attract and may end up being more embarrassing than stimulating. As such, it's a risky venture for a well-known, mainstream artist like Dave McKean to turn to. Many may immediately dismiss his latest as a work of puerile deviancy, but those sorts likely wouldn't even bother examining the book before casting such aspersions upon it. Although it is most certainly, and openly, erotic, Celluloid manages to be so much more than its label implies.

The book portrays a sexual odyssey in which a woman discovers an old film projector in her apartment. She is surprised to find it loaded with a pornographic movie, but as it plays, it begins to open a door into another world. Curious, she steps through and discovers a fantastic cityscape populated with phantom couples making love, along with another film projector that pulls her deeper into this new world.

What follows is a story of sexual growth and empowerment. She begins the story as a voyeur, but as she embraces the newly revealed and expanding worlds of physical pleasure, her self-confidence grows and she finds the strength to not be a subject of voyeurism herself. The landscapes and colors of the world change around her as she grows bolder in her participation, and McKean's artwork gains greater dimensionality as his central character grows more assertive.

Without any dialogue or captions, Celluloid is strictly a visual narrative. It has a very film-like feel to it, which is appropriate given the MacGuffin that launches both the readers and the book's character on its journey. The book unfolds like a spool of film, each page like frames in the reel. The pace of the story is left up to the reader, but McKean has created such lush visuals that many will want to linger and examine the intricacies of the imagery presented. One particularly compelling page comes early in the story and presents the nude woman watching the film while ghost-like hands and arms reach out toward her from nowhere. It's an impressive, striking piece of art on multiple levels.

McKean combines several artistic mediums in order to tell his tale. His characters are stylized sketches, but as the story develops, he begins to create collages that merge his drawings with digital paintings and photographs of models and still-life objects. Without any words to give us clues as to what the female lead is thinking or feeling, McKean relies on distorted perspective and abstract visuals to project emotion and to create a shared sense of journey between the readers and the woman. The artwork becomes an incredible thing of beauty that showcases the interplay between light, shadow, and color, taking on surrealistic and expressionistic styles. The story is inflected with supernatural metaphors, while characters are paralleled and juxtaposed against photographed objects. By combining these photographs with illustration, the story rises to a new level, creating an increasing sense of dimensionality that exhibits the woman's growth as a sexual being.

While Celluloid is certainly an adults-only venture, it hardly seems fair to label it pornography, a title that has become akin to the dirtiest of words in American groupthink. It is rife with sexual imagery, but it is so well crafted and artfully composed that it would be shameful for the book to be lost amongst lesser, smuttier works. Rather than being raunchy or demeaning or exploitative, McKean has taken the high road and created a work that rises above the genre of simple erotica and rests comfortably on an artistic level. Many of the pages are so well crafted in their surrealistic imagery that they could easily hang beside Picasso. McKean has boldly stepped away from the confines of mainstream comic books with this endeavor, and the result is a masterpiece of eroticism that relies heavily on intellect and emotion, rather than just mere arousal or titillation.
