Good subject matter, horrific writing. Typos like you would not believe! "...the topography and physical environment of one's residence may increase one's chances of being inflicted with an can we leave in disease?" A very accessible text with good information for use in a clinical setting or for students preparing for clinical practice. I use this text to facilitate discussion and learning with pre-professional health students and appreciate its practical approach to learning the aspects of culture most salient to providing good and culturally sensitive health care.

On a picky and academic note however, it is poorly edited. The text is rife with typos and also lacking in some text references; cultural theories from the social sciences are introduced and provide the backbone for some of the "domains," yet the theorists by whom they were developed are not identified.

Index is inaccurate

The information is great and informative but the index in the back of the book is completely wrong. Therefore, it is unnecessarily difficult finding information throughout the book. If memory serves me correctly, I had this same problem with an earlier version of this book when I was in school for my BSN.

Joan of Arc, born in 1412, was burned at the stake in 1431, canonized by the Catholic Church in 1920, and, like most saints, whitewashed by history. Canonization tends to strip a saint of supposedly un-Christian attributes such as rebelliousness, pride, and intolerance. And Joan, despite having been a stubborn, haughty, naive, even foolish girl, has for much of history been remembered only as a pious martyr. However, George Bernard Shaw's play, Saint Joan, completed in 1925, began the modern rehabilitation of the icon as a fully human, fallible character--not to mention a poster girl for teenage rebellion and feminism. Shaw's Joan, like the real Maid of Orleans, leads the fight to drive the English out of her native France, insists on direct communication with her God instead of submitting to the mediation of Catholic priests, and refuses to dress, speak, or act according to traditional notions of how women were expected to behave. Until the closing scene of Shaw's play, however, neither Joan nor her foes are cast in neatly heroic terms. Both are earnestly pursuing their partial visions of the truth. In the play's famous epilogue, Shaw suggests that even 400 years later, most of us are so limited by our own perspectives that we are unable to tell the difference between a saint and a heretic. Drama Instead of History

This is George Bernard Shaw's most important work. A successful drama that has enjoyed continuous popularity for nearly eighty years is worth a read. Most audiences find it very satisfying. Shaw has a gift for lucid dialogue that brings a centuries old story to life. This is one of the most approachable of the great English language plays.

Why then does "Saint Joan" fall short of five stars?

Fictional accounts of Joan of Arc's life are numerous and seldom accurate. Shakespeare makes her a witch. Voltaire makes her an idiot. Schiller makes her admirable - and gives her a magical helmet that protects her from harm until she falls in love.

In a rare exception to his usual satirical style, Mark Twain spent months in France researching her life and published a fictional biography. Readers who enjoy accurate historical fiction would do well with Twain's "Personal Recollections of Joan of Arc." Twain considered this - not "Huckleberry Finn" - to be his finest work.

Shaw pays far more attention to accuracy than most fictionalizations. Several lines in the play are Shaw's own translations from her trial transcript. Shaw's long introductory essay aspires to be history as well as drama. Most scholars agree with his assessment of Joan of Arc's socioeconomic background. Shaw acknowledges a few dramatic economies: he combines the historical Jean d'Orleans and Duke Jean d'Alencon into a single character. What causes problems are Shaw's unacknowledged deviations from the factual record.

Shaw argues that Joan of Arc was a forerunner of Protestantism who got a fair trial. Among serious scholars this argument gains no credibility. A surviving letter from the English government that financed the trial guaranteed her execution even if the court found her not guilty. Joan of Arc never rejected the Roman Catholic Church: she rejected the authority of politically biased judges bent on discrediting her and, by inference, on discrediting the king she had crowned. Twenty-four years after her death the Pope reopened the case. The appeals court not only found her innocent but discovered such extensive violations of proper court procedure that it accused the late Bishop Cauchon of heresy.

Shaw's choice works as drama rather than as history yet he advocates it on historical grounds. He might be sincere but he is certainly not honest. To an academic scholar who has explained the facts to umpteen Shaw enthusiasts the difference can be infuriating. This is why "Saint Joan" collects a handful of scathing reviews.

A reader who understands this little shell game with history should have a lively time with the drama. If this is your first reading of "Saint Joan" then I envy you. Nothing quite equals the first encounter.

the Doctor's Dilemma

THE DOCTOR'S DILEMMA is one of Shaw's most biting critical commentaries...this time on doctors. Shaw hated doctors, as a result of a botched operation on his foot, so here he portrays them as a group of ignorant, bull-headed windbags. All, that is, except for one doctor, who has actually found a cure for tuberculosis. The "dilemma" in the title is whether to use the cure on a talented young painter who is a moral and ethical sleazebag, or on an upstanding middle-aged physician who is a good soul, albeit a boring and relatively mundane one. All this is complicated by the fact that the doctor is in love with the painter's wife! The biggest problem with the play is that it has lost some of its impetus in the last century. Antibiotics can now cure tuberculosis, and the medical profession is far more restricted in its use of "experimental" treatments than it was then. However, Shaw's wit and invective is still poignant even at the end of the twentieth century. A must-read for Bernard Shaw enthusiasts....

Problem of Gender? No, a Problem of Genre!

Radical feminism, to which I pledge complete allegiance, has put gender issues at the forefront of historical interest in Joan of Arc, but historiography is scarcely pertinent to the reading of George Bernard Shaw's play 'Saint Joan.' I'm told that this awkward play was a smash hit and held the stage for decades in Britain, but it's hard to imagine how or why. The first problem is not gender but 'genre.' Is it intended to play as a farce, before an audience that will chuckle genteelly at hearing Jehan d'Arc speak with a Yorkshire brogue? Or as a philosophical tragicomedy, preparing the stage of the future for Samuel Becket? The dialogue is half music-hall burlesque and half pompous twaddle. I'd have a hard time declaring which is more juvenile, the humor or the sententious lecturing.

If anyone who reads this review has seen a staged production of the play, I'd be interested in hearing whether it was 'played for laughs' or performed earnestly. Shaw is of course taken quite seriously in the world of anglophone theater, though actual productions of his works are rare in the USA. Shaw was not reticent about assuring "us" of his intelligence, and not particularly chary of condescension, but this play features some of the dumbest jokes and most preposterous dialogue I've ever read. Any audience that wasn't overawed by Shaw's elevated reputation would groan out loud at Joan's flippant folksiness.

There seems to be a "Joan-of-Arc" effect on the minds of writers, which disposes them to bizarre extravagance. I turned to Shaw's 'Saint Joan' as a follow-up to reading Mark Twain's romantic novel/ biography "Joan of Arc.' Both works are based on historical sources, chiefly the trial records, yet neither can be interpreted as 'history' in a modern sense. Shaw was aware of Twain's book, and regarded it skeptically, yet the two works have more in common than not. Both are polemics against humanity's inability to comprehend sainthood.

Must keep in your hand if you want to learn about Drupal 8

This is a really, really good book for a beginner to an intermediate, stretching to an advanced user. The book covers a broad topic such as how to use, programing, and the other Drupal stuffs (see the TOC). I am a Drupal developer who understands Drupal 7 and now learning a basic programming manner in Drupal 8. I feel this is something like a great Drupal 8 textbook.

Note: First I purchased the "paper" book then Amazon offer for Kindle for a few dollars. Of course I also purchased Kindle version.

Get yourself productive with Drupal 8

The Drupal 8 Development Cookbook is great for a number of different types of readers, including a:
* New D8 site builder who just “wants to get something done” that can’t be done through the GUI
* D7 developer and want to learn how to accomplish things in D8
* D8 developer who wants to round out their understanding with practical solutions
* Newbie to D8!

The strength of this book is the code “recipes” that provide complete code solutions to common (and not so common) tasks that can be quickly implemented and easily modified to meet your needs.

If you’re comfortable with object oriented PHP, Drupal 8, and the new concepts and frameworks that support it, you can easily find the recipes you need, understand how they work, and get productive quickly. If you’re not so comfortable, this book has also got you covered: Chapter 1, “UP AND RUNNING WITH DRUPAL 8” will get you started preparing your environment, installing and running D8, and understanding of common admin tasks you’ll need. Then, as you follow along the code examples you’ll come to understand how it all comes together. Don’t expect deep dives into concepts or theories or “hand holding”, rather you’ll be getting concise real-world solutions.

With Drupal 8, the Drupal community moved from a “not invented here” thinking, eschewing 3rd party technology, to a “proudly found elsewhere” attitude, choosing best of breed technologies with which to build and enhance Drupal 8. This is not only great for Drupal 8 but also easier for new Drupal developers to jump into D8 as it uses many of the same technologies they’re used to, and great for existing Drupal developers to introduce them to these technologies which will make them better developers. Glaman covers Composer, PSR-4, Twig, YAML, and of course Symfony.

Besides covering all the common coding tasks like working with pages, fields, blocks, content types, i18n, entities, etc., this book tackles the trickier aspects of Drupal 8 such as configuration management, plugins, and web services, and makes note of some of the gotchas, and explains where these are likely to be headed as D8 matures.

Finally, the two CLI tools for Drupal, Drush and Drupal Console, are covered. Besides the helpful Drupal management commands, Glaman covers scaffolding code via Console. Given the boilerplate code, directory structure, “mundane” tasks OO, PSR-4 and Symfony require, this is a feature you’re going to want to embrace. Too new to be included in the book, try the “--learning” flag on generate command to “generate a verbose code output” which means you’ll get the scaffold code with plenty of descriptive comments.

I was the technical reviewer for this book as it was being written, and Glaman showed not only a strong proficiency for coding in Drupal 8, but also the “why”, as he’s been following the continued development of Drupal 8 closely.

After I read this book, I forgot all about how "Stella" got her groove back! Lolita Files' characters, Misty and Reesy don't "wait to exhale" but draw us into their lives - in full force, with great detail. As a young black woman, I could really identify with this book, especially the 90's dating scene. I wanted a friend from TX to read it so much that I bought if for her, including the sequel "Getting to the Good Part," which I'm reading right now. Now that I've discovered Lolita Files, I don't know who Terry M. is anymore; Lolita Files is 'da bomb !

READING SATIFACTION GUARANTEED

Scenes From A Sistah most definitely ranks up there with the greats. It is a story about a friendship that is everything a friendship should be. We all should be so lucky to find a friend that together we balance each other out. I love Misty's career mind and Reesy's ability to speak what's on her mind. They compliment each other because, one's weakness is the others strong points. This book was so good that I could not put it down. I basically finished reading it in one day. Whenever I'm in the bookstore, I make sure that I recommend it to at least one person before I leave. Even the guys will enjoy this one. So, if you don't already own a copy make sure and obtain one. I guarantee you will enjoy it.

Lolita Files is truly a very gifted writer and a very inspiring person. I've had the pleasure of being in her presence on a couple of occasions and if she's anywhere near YOU, make sure you attend and get a chance to hear her read because she brings the characters to life with her voice, expressions, and attitudes so well that if you haven't read it you will and if you have, you'll read it again. She is most definitely one to watch.

And if you read this Lolita, thanks for being yourself. You have most definitely inspired me. You are definitely a great asset to African American Readers and Inspiring Writers. I, along with many others, look forward to the next book

Finally a novel of TRUE SISTAHSHIP

"Scenes from a Sistah" is something that is known tobe fiction but in return it's nonfiction. In other words, this novelis true & demostrates everything that actually happens in a "Sistah's" life. Reesy is someone I believe we all know, if it's not ourselves. I loved her, she was full of SPUNK!! Now, Misty (career wise) is where I would love to be. But the sista was totally clueless when it came to men. She reminds me of the saying, " She got book sense, but no common sense". Now, that was MISTY!!! But over all I admired the friendship... the bonding between two sistahs!! This relationship really exist, it's true to the heart. Great Novel... a must read!!!

An Excellent Synopsis

This book contains everything a modern reader who is anything but a professional Middle East scholar could ever want to know about the history of the region (especially about the Arab-Israeli conflicts). Most importantly, it is presented in a strictly factual, unemotional manner which allows the reader to understand the current problems there and to make his or her own judgments without the facts being skewed or, indeed, being portrayed in a subjective light at all. With this account under one's belt, it is impossible to see the conflicts of the Middle East in a wholly black-and-white, right-and-wrong way. Indeed, the cold facts show how all parties involved have countless reasons for their behavior, and how no one party can ever be completely blamed.
Having also read what Mansfield himself considered to be his crowning achievement, "The Arabs", I actually feel that this is a superior work, at least for my purposes. "A History of the Middle East" presents a more sweeping view for the amateur (but serious) scholar, and can be used as a good reference despite being more than a decade old.
Mansfield follows the region from prehistory, through the Ottoman Empire, and into the modern age, explaining events and motivations in a reasonable and straightforward manner.
It must be mentioned that this is not an exciting book for those without a passionate interest in foreign affairs. But those who are driven to know and understand the goings-on of the modern world will find it an invaluable addition to their library.

I believe the original author Mansfield would be disappointed in what Nicolas Pelham has done with this "revised and updated" version of his book. Mansfield died in 1996 and Pelham was given the task of "updating" this history of the Middle East. I was very impressed with the first 340 pages of this book. I was looking for an even-keeled, unbiased history of this very charged and polarizing subject. I was very pleased to find that Peter Mansfield had done exactly that. Mansfield's original work went up to the first Gulf War and provided a very even history of events from ancient times to the immediate post-Gulf War period. He provides a very readable account that puts current events into context without betraying his own bias. I had been recommending this book to many friends, before I came to Pelham's contribution that picks up in the post war period. He doesn't even try to contain his contempt for the United States and it's allies. The language and tone of the book change dramatically and it is easy to tell where Pelham picks up in the 13th chapter: The Inter-War Years. His contribution amounts to an intensely felt indictment of the United States and it's policy in Middle Eastern affairs. He loses credibility when he throws in trite and petty personal attacks on Western leadership that have no relation to the events he is describing. Even the grammatical integrity changes. There were multiple grammatical and spelling errors in Pelham's chapter. The transition from Mansfield to Pelham is very abrupt and disruptive, regardless of your political leanings. I am very disappointed as the first 340 pages were excellent and exactly what I was hoping for. If you must buy this edition than be prepared. I would have given Mansfield's book 5+ stars and Pelham's contribution 1 star (being generous). I still gave the book a 4 star average because Mansfield's work deserves recognition and it comprised the bulk of the book.

A great book

This book is not only very informative and well written but also manages to be reasonably impartial on some of the hottest issues in international relations. The tone changes slightly when Pelham takes over from Mansfield but this is also when we approach the present time. I appreciated the fact that criticism is not one-sided as undoubtedly the Israel-vs-Palestinians problem cannot be summarized by placing all blame on any one side. In fact, I found the exposition more balanced and less negative against Israel than I was expecting from somebody who studied arabic in Damascus and is currently living in Jordan.
Perhaps the Pelham portion would deserve only 4 stars but the rest of the book would be 5+. I would have appreciated a few more and more informative maps but an overall 5 is well deserved.

About the Author
Darrell Young (DigitalDarrell) is a full-time author and professional photographer with a background in information technology engineering.

He has been an avid photographer since 1968 when his mother gave him a Brownie Hawkeye camera. Darrell has used Nikon cameras and Nikkor lenses since 1980. He has an incurable case of Nikon Acquisition Syndrome (NAS) and delights in working with Nikon's newest digital cameras.

Living near Great Smoky Mountains National Park and the Blue Ridge Parkway has given him a real concern for the natural environment and a deep interest in nature photography. You'll often find Darrell standing behind a tripod in the beautiful mountains of Tennessee and North Carolina. He loves to write, as you can see in the Resources area of the Nikonians Online community (Nikonians.org) and at his Master Your Nikon blog (MasterYourNikon.com).

He joined the Nikonians community in the year 2000, and his literary contributions led to his invitation to become the founding member of the Nikonians Writers Guild.

A 5 Star must have for Nikon D810 owners!

I am an avid amateur photographer and have owned several of the best Nikon DSLRs. Owners manuals just don't do it for me and I have always bought Darrell Young's "Mastering the Nikon ---" books. I have tried other well known Nikon camera authors and unfortunately they just don't have the writing style and flow that Darrell Young has. I purchased the D810 when it was first released by Nikon and although I have spent a lot of time with the camera, Darrell Young' D800 book and the owners manual I was just basically treading water until this book was released. Although I thought I knew this magnificent camera well, I have picked up many ideas and pointers that will make my use of this camera much more effective. The book is easy to read and follow and I will use it very frequently to get to know my camera better. The D810 is a complex camera and this book explains and provides advice on its menu settings in a way that I can understand and follow.

If you have purchased a Nikon D810 (even if you have owned other Nikon DSLRs) this book is a must read. Pick a rainy day and go cover to cover (with the camera in your lap). The D810 is a powerful tool and Darrell Young will help you get the most out of it. The writing style lets you easily get through what could be just another dry camera manual. I have owned multiple pro level Nikon cameras and I am familiar with their Menu system. None the less this book was a great help in setting up my new camera.
Take the D810 and go shoot, but if you really want to get the most out of your investment and take great pictures read the book.

Kindle Edition a Smart Carry-Along

I was curious about the possibility of carrying this manual around with me on my Kindle Fire, so I downloaded the sample. After reading through the first chapters it was clear that this would make a great camera bag companion which could even be brought along on iPhone with the Kindle App. I quickly purchased the full edition.

On the Kindle Fire, images can be double tapped and pinched to enlarge and can be viewed in horizontal format when necessary. They hold their quality quite well. What I like most about the digital copy is that I can highlight information I feel I will go back to regularly and even include my own notes.

The book is packed with information but is easy to follow. It's detailed to a fault with step by step guides. Most importantly author Darrell Young does not just offer rote direction but includes his suggestions as to what photographic circumstances the current topic would lend itself. I immediately found his review of the camera's Auto-FP High Speed Sync functions useful.

I have several other text manuals for my previous Nikon DSLR's but based on this one I think I will stick with Mr. Young's guides in the future.

An excellent guide to truly understanding the numbers

As someone who works in investment banking, I can say this book is applicable to much more than just due diligence. It can help an analyst through most financial analysis situations(assuming the user knows the basics of how to use and analyze financial statements). What's best about the book is that it goes beyond the theory and academic stuff and gets down to real "how-to's" and "why's". He goes through every account that would appear on the three major financial statements and explains what to look for in them, how to find the answer if it's not readily apparent, what questions to ask and why the questions are important. He also thoroughly examines off-balance sheet, off-income statement and qualitative items that are essential to analysis. Beware, there are no numbers or examples to work through in this book. This book is quite literally one man's experience and intuition put into written form. If you understand that financial analysis is not as cut-and-dry as looking at well-prepared, fully forthcoming financial statements with all the info you need already given, then this book is just what you are looking for. It helps you get the right numbers to which you can apply meaningful financial analysis.

Fantastic refresher for any business consultant

As business people we tend to specialize in areas of a company's existence. We also know however, that a successful business is an integrated whole which must be studied considering all aspects simultaneously to have a complete picture. Although probably not the stated purpose of the book, the result is a re-examination of all the important aspects of a business, which should help broaden our perspective as we deal with our business and investment.

Gabby became an Olympic Pistol shooter, and she used to train 6 days a week 4-5 hours a day after school. Gabby became Venezuelan National Champion for several years. Gabby moved to the United States in 2002 shortly after her last match in Brazil (South American Games) where She won 3 Gold medals. Essential Took for Any Shooter

I took Gabby's Shoot Perfect course and was totally impressed. Years of bad habits were cured, or at least identified. Gabby's manual is the next best thing to having her instruct you in person. Her goal is to make you the best marksman you can be, with sound fundamentals and an understanding of what goes into making a good shot. We take simple things for granted, such as "focus on the front sight." Gabby shows you why this is important. Once I quit "watching" the front sight and started SEEING the front sight, my groups shrank dramatically. The book is full of fundamentals that are deceptively simple, but are actually quite profound. Like me, you will have that "Ah ha!" moment when everything starts to make sense. Over the last 40 years, I've seen courses that specialized in gun handling, tactics, and dealing with lethal force issues. None of this means anything if you can't hit the target. This manual will make you a better shooter. Buy one copy for the shelf, and stick another in your range bag. You won't regret it.

Troubleshooting Is Exactly What This Book Does

I first looked at the reviews written on Amazon about his book and went to Google, Gabby's website, Youtube and anywhere else I could find information about her. She is solid and you will find that within the pages of this book.
Whatever you have learned so far if you realized any improvement, great. What TroubleShooting: Mastering your Pistol Marksmanship does is enhance and fine-tune the nuances that you are be missing. Greater!
While it is short read, the information is worth going over and over again. The photos that compliment the techniques are worth WAY more than the book. The practice exercises are priceless if you pay attention and. If you apply them you will be rewarded. After going through this book thoroughly the first five shots at the range paid off handsomely and that's the truth. I was amazed. I pulled 3-5" groups with a 3.33" barrel .45 at 20 yards and suddenly, everyone else at the range began sending their targets out to 20. They shot horribly I might add. Following the 5-shot practices in the book I was very pleased with the first 15 shots. Unbelievable is all I can say.
No Zen or other mumbo-jumbo included, this book is all about perfection through approach, routine (practice) and delivery. Yes, you have to think about what you are doing but, no spooky BS. Let it become second nature.
TroubleShooting: Mastering your Pistol Marksmanship is a great purchase if you intend to improve your overall skill. I still can't believe that so much is packed into this book for so little. It's genuinely electrifying!
Last month I updated my review of Albert H. League III's book The Perfect Pistol Shot because I was impressed with the knowledge that he shares and it is definitely a keeper. TroubleShooting: Mastering your Pistol Marksmanship really, really puts the icing on the cake no matter what you may think your skill level is if you're not shooting in the top 10%. This book is excellent And I recommend it to any handgun owner looking to advance their shooting. I'm waiting for TroubleShooting: Mastering your Pistol Marksmanship II.

Excellent book for beginners and people just trying to get better with pistols

I've been shooting rifles most of my life and I'm very good with them. However I'm rather horrible with pistols because unlike with rifles I had no training along the way. I have a couple pistols that I haven't enjoyed shooting because I was absolutely horrible with them. It had nothing to do with the guns themselves but my own inability. When I saw this book I thought it was high time I did something to fix my own inability to shoot by relearning how to shoot correctly with pistols. This book does exactly that by teaching me what to do correctly and in turn what I'm doing wrong.

The only thing that I think would make this book better is if all the shooting practices were also duplicated in the back of the book so I could rip out or copy those pages to put into a quick reference guide to take with me. It's a bit difficult at the range to keep leafing through the book to find the practice sessions information each time I want to shoot.

Did Ms. Karon write this book?

I am an avid reader of Ms. Karon’s novels. As a matter of fact, in the past six months I have read and re-read the entire series at least 4 times while waiting not so patiently for the release of Come Rain or Come Shine. There is a reason for this. I have had a very stressful year and I find visits to Mitford very relaxing. Every character in this series is complete; there isn’t a one-dimensional body in the bunch. Even the nodding acquaintances have a unique and full place in Ms. Karon’s stories. These books make the perfect escape. I love them dearly. Reading these novels makes me feel like I’m going home.

But, her writing is also a joy to read. Her descriptions are unique and folksy, and fit perfectly with each scene and character. She weaves minor story lines through the major plot so well that, like a braided rope, the main story line is stronger, better, because it is the sum of all its parts.

Which leads me to wonder, did Ms. Karon really write Come Rain or Come Shine? Although I loved attending the wedding, from the very first page I could not shake the feeling that this was not typical Jan Karon writing. Perhaps it is the transition from Father Tim to Lace and Dooley as the main characters, changing the voice of the narrative, that bothered me. It just seemed to me that the story was superficial, the characters flat; this book seems to skim the surface of the characters’ emotions. For example in the previous books, the story of Pauline’s apology would have been much more important, given more room to breathe, more of a lead up. Here, it seemed weak and watered down. It wasn’t given enough space for the reader to really connect, to feel Pauline’s struggle, or Sammy’s struggle. A number of stories hinted at here were nothing more than a tease. In the earlier books, the subplots would have been fully realized, satisfying. Here, I was left wanting more.

And Lace. There is little remnant there of the girl she used to be. I was waiting for an outburst of Creek-speak from her, something to let us know that she is still Lace. Or some other connection to her past life. Although her history is talked about, it is only that, talked about. There is little evidence of the Lace that we love. Yes, she has grown into a wonderful woman, and she “talks” a lot about her change and growth, but we would have “seen” more of this if it had been written as the earlier novels were.

I know that because of time – we are all getting older – the story needs to be passed to Dooley and Lace. But I feel cheated. There are 8 years unaccounted for in this novel. Sammy’s story, Father Brad’s story, Coot …. Oh, and Barnabas. Heartbreaking that we were not there with Father Tim at Barnabas’s passing and Barnabas gets such backhanded treatment.

Father Tim’s voice was missing. He was there, inserted just enough times to perhaps convince the reader he was still there, but he and Cynthia were side stories. I know it is time for him to move on, I know it is time for Dooley and Lace to take over. But Father Tim is not dead yet!

And we can’t go back now, we can only move forward.

This isn’t a “Mitford Novel.” It is a “Meadowgate Novel.” The writing is weaker, lacking the beautiful literary devices that Ms. Karon usually wields so deftly, and the plot lacks the depth of the previous novels.

I enjoyed being at the wedding, but I felt like a distant relation instead of part of the family.

If you love Mitford, you will love this novel anyway. And that’s okay. It is worth the read. But it isn’t typical Jan Karon.

Confusing and difficult to read!

Come Rain or Come Shine by Jan Karon is the book that readers have been looking forward to for a long time. Dooley Kavanaugh and Lace Harper are getting married. They have decided to get married at their new home, Meadowgate. Meadowgate is a farm in Farmer, North Carolina. They want it to be a simple wedding (no wedding is simple). The wedding date is set for June 14. Dooley and Lace decided to make it a potluck dinner reception (asking each guest to bring a dish). Until the wedding, they have plenty to keep them busy. Dooley has to finish veterinary school and graduate. They are busy fixing up the farm (the house, fences, and barn). They have purchased four cows and are awaiting the arrival of their new bull, Choo-Choo (I am not kidding). Dooley will be taking over a veterinary practice after graduation and they will be installing a new sign that reads “Kavanaugh Animal Wellness Clinic”.

Lace is looking forward to her new life. She is busy looking for a wedding dress (she wants to get one for $100), making and selling her paintings (which will pay for some extras, and creating a wedding gift for Dooley. Father Tim and Cynthia have moved out to the farm to help out until the wedding. Lace and Dooley also have a special surprise for their parents. They have had something in the works for two years, and it is finally happening just before the wedding. Let us hope that everything goes off without a hitch. What could go wrong (rain, not enough food, surprise guests, escaping animals)?

Read Come Rain or Come Shine to find out what happens. I was so excited when I got a copy of this book. I have read all the books in this series (and loved them). Unfortunately, this book was a disappointment. The main problem is the way it was written. It is written from the perspective of the different characters (not just one as in first person). It jumps around and it can be very confusing. One moment it is Lace, then Father Tim, and then who knows who. You have to guess sometimes (because the author only used pronouns and not names) and it changes abruptly (you had to guess based on what the person was saying). This made the novel hard to read. I do not know what possessed the author to write the novel in this format. I wish it had been written differently so Come Rain or Come Shine could have been more enjoyable to read. I give Come Rain or Come Shine 3.75 out of 5 stars.

Confusing & disappointing

I was so looking forward to this book. I've been a fan of the Mitford books since the first was issued, but this was a disappointment. There were too many things happening at the time of the wedding that I thought were distracting from what the focus should have been - the committment of Dooley & Lace to each other. Choo Choo & Jack Tyler could have been saved for the next book.

I know Karon usually has several years to have gone by as a way to move the plot forward in a new novel, but it felt like too much was missed when this book began. Barnabas was a main character because of Father Tim's relationship with him, yet here his death is pretty much just mentioned as a detail. And while Dooley & Lace always had a relationship I found it a little hard to grasp how Lace went from still not trusting to being so deeply in love. I wish how their relationship evolved would have better detailed in a previous book.

The constant switching between characters, but only identifying the person as "he/she thought" was confusing. I constantly had to skip ahead to find out which character it was supposed to be. Ultimately I'm glad we finally reached the point where this couple married, but I don't feel that it was as well written as the original Mitford books.
