Very narrow use of examples and very application specific

I was dissappointed with this book. I found myself skipping whole chapters because they were so application specific (Access) and I just couldn't extrapolate the bigger concepts from the narrow use of applications. It was also a lot more technical then I expected, so I would recommend this book to someone that uses Access specifically, and who has the basics down pretty well, and is looking for a pehaps shorter version of a much more technical book. I haven't quite finished it, so if I find a particularly useful hidden "gem", that makes it more star-worthy I will come back and update.

A surprisingly complete, design-oriented book!

This is a great book and I'm going to teach out of it. It is clearer and more accessible than big database textbooks that cost $140 (which the students never read anyway.) Plus, it has great screenshots and covers both Mysql qnd Microsoft Access. But what I really like is how much design he put into it. It covers a lot of the really essential items and is a pleasure to read.

Good for a beginner, pity about "Northwind"

As a hobbyist in this field one of the books that I've found useful has been "Databases demystified" by Andy Oppel - a really basic introduction on the 'how to' of databases. The text is easy to follow and what I like was that at the end of each chapter there is a 'quiz' where you get to test whether you understood what you had just read. I'd used relational databases in the past (not designed them), so understood the basics, but this book helped me get my head around the language and why things are as they are.

Not a bad section on SQL except that it was all written for Oracle. I'm in search of a 'generic' book that explains about using databases, one that doesn't reflect the writers career path. Maybe it will never happen!

The other thing I found annoying about this book, and just about everything else written for beginners on databases, is that they all use the Microsoft Access 'Northwind' example. I reckon the mythical Northwind must be the most written about company in the computer beginners guides. But forgive me world, there is more to life than Microsoft Access.

Databases demystified is not as bad as some when it comes to this, but their whole chapter on Form-based Database Queries uses Microsoft Access as the example -- why? It is well worth putting aside these problems because the book is easy to read, full of general advice, and when you finish it you will know the basics, and a bit more, of data base design.

Definitely worth the investment if you are going to use a database as part of your application and if, like me, you've never done it before.

What I liked:

- Easy to read and you'll find the quizzes help you check your learning (McGraw Hill are the publishers).
- Doesn't make too many assumptions about pre-existing knowledge -- most things are explained in a clear and simple, but not patronising way.

What sucks:

- All the books I see that use Northwind and Microsoft Access as the default beginner's example database. Please universe -- stop doing that!
- Why make the SQL section so specific to Oracle? The book was pretty good when it was general, but quickly became confusing when it got into specific platforms.

His idea of the open-classroom method is to start his fifth graders on a project and then sit back and relax with coffee and a newspaper. So when Cara Landry writes a newspaper with an editorial about the lack of teaching going on in room 145, the former "Teacher of the Year" gets very upset. Realizing that the girl is stating the truth, he starts a unit on journalism and the class enthusiastically begins a newspaper. With Cara as editor, the project blossoms. However, when she allows a very personal and poignant story on divorce to be printed, the principal sees it as an opportunity to get rid of Mr. Larson. The teacher then uses the proceedings as a real-life lesson on the First Amendment. The children rally to his support, as does the faculty, and at a public hearing he is vindicated. With chapter headings reading like headlines, the plot moves quickly. Bits of humor lighten the theme of "Truth with Mercy." The author has created believable characters, from the beleaguered Mr. Larson to the intelligent and thoughtful Cara. Readers will cheer for both of them as they move toward the satisfying conclusion.

What bright girls really want to read!

Andrew Clements knows exactly what goes on in the heads of upper elementary students, and in their classrooms. Once again he has written a book that is so good it is difficult to put down. Thank you to the student reviewer who helped me find this book for my daughter - and I'm not sure who enjoyed it more!

This book is great; The Landry News features many details about newspapers. I learned about parts on a newspaper I didn't even know existed. As Cara Landry starts fifth grade at another school, she feels a little nervous. Mr. Larson, her teacher does not teach. Cara sees that all Mr. Larson pays attention to is a newspaper while drinking his coffee. She decides to make her own newspaper with the help of her friends, but she has some articles that can cause problems for other people.

I would recommend this book to anyone. It had humor and mystery. It was very descriptive and it kept me involved. I always wanted to read more to see what would happen next.

Highly recommended book about Hadoop best practices and example architectures

This book aims to provide best practices and example architectures for Hadoop technologists, how does it fare?

This book is written for developers and architects that are already familiar with Hadoop, who wish to learn some of the current best practices, example architectures and complete implementations. It assumes some existing knowledge of Hadoop and its components (e.g. Flume, HBase, Pig, and Hive). Book references are provided for those needing topic refreshers. Additionally, it’s assumed you are familiar with Java programming, SQL and relational databases. It consists of two sections, the first of which has seven chapters and looks at factors that influence application architectures. The second consists of three chapters, each providing a complete end-to-end case study.

Below is a chapter-by-chapter exploration of the topics covered.

Section I Architectural Considerations for Hadoop Applications

Chapter 1 Data Modeling in Hadoop

The chapter opens with a look at storage considerations. Various file types are discussed, and the importance of spilltable compressed data highlighted. Avro and Parquet are generally the preferred file formats for row and columnar based storage respectively.

The chapter continues with at look at factors to consider when storing data in HDFS. Directory structures are recommended (e.g. /users/). If you know what tools you intend to use to process the data (e.g. Hive), you can take advantage of partitioning – reduces IO, bucketing – improves performance of joins, and denormailization – eliminates the need for joining data.

Factors to consider when storing data in HBase are discussed next. HBase is a NoSQL database, often thought of as a huge distributed hash table. This key-value store is optimized for fast lookups, and is especially suitable for problems having relatively few get and put requests. HBase tables can have millions of columns and billions of rows. Important considerations for choosing the row key are discussed. Other aspects of HBase covered include: use of timestamps, hops, tables and regions, and the use of column families.

The chapter ends with a look at metadata, describing what metadata is, and why it’s important. The importance of the Hive metastore and its reuse by other tools is discussed.

This chapter provides a useful discussion of features to consider in data modeling. Some sections seem wordy, but probably need to be so. Some useful recommendations are given (e.g. use the Avro file format), together supporting reasons.

From its start, it’s clear this is not a book for beginners. The chapter is well written, has useful explanations, discussions, diagrams, references, links to other chapters, and considered recommendations. A useful chapter conclusion is provided. These features apply to the whole book.

This book aims to provide Hadoop current best practices, example architectures and complete implementations – and succeeds in each area.

The book is well written, providing good explanations, examples, walkthroughs, and diagrams. Useful links are given between chapters, and there’s a valuable conclusion at the end of each chapter. The order of the chapters is helpful in understanding the flow of topics. This is not a book for beginners, but does contain useful references to books to get you up to speed.

In many ways, this book follows on naturally from “Hadoop: The Definitive Guide”, which I recently reviewed. It provides practical discussions of the many factors to consider when presented with common Hadoop architectural concerns (e.g. whether to use HDFS or HBase?). The book offers recommendations, and provides supporting information that backs these up.

The book doesn’t cover all Hadoop technologies (e.g. it omits Machine Learning), but it does cover many popular ones. Some of the books referenced are getting old and some chapters have footnotes at the end, which would be better placed on the pages where they are referenced.

Hadoop is changing rapidly, this book suggests the near future will see a decline in MapReduce processing, and a rise in processing using Spark. Similarly, at the higher-level of abstraction, SQL in its various flavours also appears to be in ascendancy.

If you want to know the current state of Hadoop and its components, want a practical discussion of the pros and cons for using various tools, and want solutions to common problems, I can highly recommend this book.

Wow, this is an impressive book on Hadoop. The content is rich and comprehensive. Normally, I'd expect to read 3-4 books to cover the same amount of material. It reads well and the chapters are methodically laid out. Kudos to the authors for crafting such a well written book.

Well written guide that distinguishes how deep you are involved, enhances your insight whatever the emtry level in Hadoop was. Some of the suggestions on tools are getting already outdated with time running since book release, but basics still hold true.

An absolute riveting read ....I could not put this book down ....It had me gripped right from the start which is unusual for me ! It's about the divide between love and culture which is something as a westerner I know nothing about as my decisions are something I take for granted . . I can only urge you to buy this book and see for yourself . It was both sad , happy and an eye opener ....easy and compelling reading . I was actually sad to finish it and eagerly await book number two by Kavita Comar. ....

One of the greatest books I've read. Anu was so easy to relate to from the start. Many times I had my own flashbacks of growing up in my Indian parents' home. I love how confident Anu is with taking control of her life. This whole book felt like a long story told from your best friend- the exciting good times, bad times, stressful times, and resolutions! Highly recommended!!

This show is only in Japanese so far. I watched it on Hulu Plus, and it was great! There are 13 episodes total (I wish there were more!) Genres: Comedy, Drama, maybe Romance?

It is about two high school students who are "anti-love," who pretend to date each other because the female lead (Masuzu Natsukawa) is tired of guys asking her out all the time, and blackmails the male lead (Eita Kido) into it by threatening to expose his embarrassing diary that she found (consisting of his fantasies of his past life). She starts a club to help other girls become who they want to be. The competing girls for the male lead's affections include his childhood friend (Chiwa Harusaki - AKA "Chihuahua-chan"), then later a shy girl who thinks she was his lover in their past life (Himeka Akishino), and one of the school's hall monitors who thinks she is his fiance because they signed a marriage agreement in kindergarten (Ai Fuyuumi - AKA "A-chan").

The title, Oreshura, is short for "Ore no Kanojo to Osananajimi ga Shuraba Sugiru," which translates as "My Girlfriend and Childhood Friend Fight Too Much"

It's directed by Kanta Kamei, studio A-1 Pictures, and licensed by Aniplex. It was originally aired January 6, 2013 – March 31, 2013. The original manga was written by Yūji Yūji and published by Square Enix.
