So-so

This is an alright Stine book. I like how it says To be continued with book 2 because I never seen that befor in a R. L. Stine book but I'm really against the including of beer and a bar in it! I really do not think that should have been included in the book . I think there could have been a more appropriate setting. Like a park hangout. Not a bar and drinking none the less!

Must Read for Fear Street Fans

After a brief hiatus, R.L. Stine returned to his "Fear Street" series with book one in a new trilogy back in 2005. Lewis, Jamie, Nate and other teenagers begin sneaking out at night - giving them the freedom to do anything the want. They hang out at the old Fear mansion that is soon to be demolished. The mansion is said to be cursed by the spirit of Angelica Fear. One night the kids discover a hidden room filled with valuables. They steal several of the objects.

A year passes by and the Fear Mansion has been torn down. Several shopping stores have been built over the ruins, including a bar called "Nights." The bar stays open late at night and serves beer to the teens. Strange accidents soon occur, and it eventually ends up with one of the teens being murdered. Is the curse of Angelic Fear true?

I grew up reading the "Fear Street" series. I quit reading them in the late 90's when I could no longer find in the stores. After I did some research online, I found out that there are dozens of "Fear Street" books that I don't have. In 2005, I was looking forward to this new series, but I could never find them at my local Walmart or at the Barnes & Nobles in the city. I never thought about the books again, until late one night I typed in "Fear Street" in the search engine at Overstock.com. That's were I found the "Fear Street Nights" trilogy. "Moonlight Secrets" is under 200 pages and is an easier and faster read than the new supernatural style teen books that are out today. There's not very many thrills in the first book. It mostly just introduces the characters and sets everything up for the second and third books. Fans of the original series will get a kick out of the return of Simon and Angelica Fear.

Really Torn About This Trilogy

When it comes to the Fear Street Nights trilogy, these are all books I’ve never even heard of from R.L. Stine, let alone have read in the past. These clearly came out once I had already outgrown the series and thus, stopped looking for new books. The background story is that the town is fed up with all of the rumors and myths about Fear Street and have voted to tear down all of the houses (the Fear mansion, included) and build a large shopping center. I suppose you have to give Stine credit for keeping up with the times. Nostalgia means nothing in the face of economic development in today’s age and time. But the irony is they were able to tear everything apart without any incidences. I mention this fact because in one of the saga’s there was a huge accident when they were just trying to build Fear Street. So one would assume it would happen again, right?

Anyways, Jamie and Lewis begin sneaking out every night and basically do nothing. They stalk around Fear Street, hang out in the old Fear mansion before it’s torn down and make out. Eventually other kids catch on and it seems the entire senior and junior class at Shadyside are stalking the streets every night. Don’t get me started on how none of them ever get caught by a cop. Anyways, one night they discover a secret room filled with all sorts of witchcraft paraphernalia, jewelry and other antiques. Of course, this seems improbable, as the house has been searched time and time again, not only in this book, but in other books. But whatever. They all take some for themselves. Then one night Jamie and Lewis discover a creepy and threatening voice on Jamie’s recorder. They go to investigate before everything is completely gone from the site and fall into a pit and nearly die.

Jump ahead a year later and everyone’s favorite spot is a bar called Nights that was built where the old Fear Mansion used to be. Once again, these kids never get caught. Never after a year of dozens of them sneaking out, do they get caught. Not even in the bar! My sense of disbelief is on such high alert at this point that I might just have a coronary. Jamie and Lewis’ accident is briefly touched upon and it turns out they were held back and had to repeat their senior year. Seems a little convenient, right?

The teens are obnoxious, especially Shark who thinks he’s so hilarious. But more than that, they are extremely cruel and hateful to Shark’s ex, Candy. And yes, that’s the poor girl’s name. But don’t let her name fool you, she couldn’t be further from being deemed “sweet.” Each prank/attack on her leads to strange things begin to happen to Nate. But here’s where all the details start getting fuzzy. Everyone starts magically bringing out these things they looted from the Fear house. One girl who was introduced as someone new to the group even produces a necklace. The story line starts to become confusing and honestly, inconsistent. While I usually love the use of paranormal sources in these books, all of the little mistakes about the group and the details really make it hard to stay interested… until they kill poor Candy. Now, on to the next book, which is actually a continuation of this story.

PBL that Works for students

PBL Starter Kit
Wow. Finally a book that makes Project Based Learning (PBL) understandable and effectively planned in any school setting. PBL is where the project becomes the unit or mini-unit. 21st Century skills, including Communication, Collaboration, and Critical Thinking--among others, are incorporated. Students learn the curriculum standards or learning objectives as they seek real world solutions and/or develop innovative answers to complex driving questions. Many examples can be found at the BIE org site.

The authors use a conversational format that's engaging, and guides the reader's understanding through clear explanations and vignettes. They guide you through the PBL development, and management of a project so that when you're done reading you will have a completed product, using their enclosed templates.

I conduct workshops on PBL through out Michigan, and have switched to this book as the resource for the volume of teachers I coach. I wish I had this book years ago when I did national training on PBL. Get this book, and any teacher and instructional leader will find this reference quickly dog-eared, highlighted, and annotated from much usage.

Get Ready to Implement PBL

If you have always wanted to try Project Based Learning, but have found it difficult to even know where to start, this is the guide for you. The book clearly takes teachers through the process of creating, managing, and reflecting on a project based learning assessment. The authors place an emphasis on designing a project that is authentic in nature and is integrated into the standards for learning rather than just the culminating activity for a unit. Examples and design templates make certain the user is creating a successful PBL unit.

This is a must have for teachers who want to ensure they are preparing their students for the 21st Century world in which we live.

Finally! A break from theory with some practical guidance.

I have been researching Project-Based Learning to implement in my classroom since I started teaching four years ago. This is by far the most useful book I have found. Buck Institute of Education has the handouts available on the website, so the kindle version would work just fine. I ended up ordering both. It gives you a clear cut path to implementing a project in your classroom. It is actually designed for you to plan one as you read it. It was a nice relief of book after book of theory without any real guidance on practical application. If you are thinking of starting your first project or even if you have some experience with projects, I highly recommend you check out this book as it will drastically increase the quality of work and smoothness of your project (if projects can and should really go smoothly). FYI, I teach High School Science and used this book to plan four projects this year. They were the most successful learning experiences I have probably set up, and like I said, I have been working at implementing PBL for four years. BIE has some great resources. Check out their website before you purchase to see where they are coming from. I don't think you will regret Project Based Learning or using this book to get you there, unless you are not into student-centered learning.

There's nothing like a fantastic story with the GRAND DADDY

There's nothing like a fantastic story with the GRAND DADDY, Diana, Hero and Devil. One goes back a million years in time.
Hope you continue printing them till the end of the adventures with the drawings of MOORE, MCCOY and SY BARRY, finally.
The first stories, especially THE MYSTERIOUS GIRL and THE PRISONER OF THE HIMALAYAS are my favorites. Read them
a hundred times, in English, Portuguese(O Fantasma) and Spanish (El Hombre Enmascarado). Never will stop reading!!!!!!!

The Ghost Who Walks is still walkin!

This compliation of the Sundays in a single volume is the last. The Sundays are now integrated into the dailies, beginning with Volume 9. This volume has many great storylines and great art by Ray Moore and Wilson McCoy........very enjoyable.

Great book for managers AND investors

Value is one of the best books I've read that cuts to the core of how businesses should operate. It focuses the reader on the four ways that value is created and guides us through both business and market implications for companies who create value versus those that focus on the wrong things. Messrs. Koller, Dobbs and Huyett cover a number of topics that any business leader or investor would find useful.

The first part of the book identifies the four pillars of value and helps to answer the following questions:
1) When is growth or return on invested capital more important? How does each increase value?
2) How do you identify activities that add value versus ones either diminish value or shift risk around?
3) How do you spot a company on the wrong end of the "expectations treadmill" and what are the implications?
4) How can you take advantage of the "Best Owner" principle? What are the implications for M&A?

In the second part of the book, the authors break down the stock market in aggregate. They help the reader understand how the market works, compare the link between interest rates and inflation with P/E performance over the last 100 years, model the stock market and explain where and why stock market bubbles occur. Next, they discuss the problems with earnings management and show what a poor job "consensus earnings" do at actually forecasting the future. Their message to managers is just don't do it.

In part three, the authors dive into value creation and discuss what drives return on capital. They break down return on invested capital by industry segment from 1965-2007 and provide the reader with insights into why some industries perform better than others. For investors, this segment is particularly interesting as the book explains that the ROIC advantages or disadvantages of specific industries tend to be sticky meaning we should expect those with an advantage to retain it barring any major structural shifts. The book then explores growth, discusses why growth is difficult to sustain and reviews how different types of growth are rewarded in the market.

The book discusses the following concepts in great detail including portfolio theory (The Business Portfolio ch. 12), M&A (ch. 13), risk (ch. 14), capital structure (ch. 15) and investor communications (ch. 16). These sections all offer insight and pose questions that will make managers rethink how they address these topics. With portfolio theory, the authors explain how the best owner principle should drive what businesses a company operates. In M&A, the book takes a look at what makes a good versus bad acquisition. In risk, the reader gets help thinking through external risks and how to help manage these risks. Chapter 15 discusses capital structures and how companies should think through their debt-to-equity mix, identify the "savings" from debt versus equity, and discuss how to return excess free cash flow to investors. In chapter 16 the authors explore investor communications in detail and describe what types of activities are helpful versus those that do not add much value.

The book closes out with a final chapter, entitled Managing for Value, that provides the "so what" of the topics discussed. It provides guidance for how managers and boards should use the four pillars of value to help guide decisions and identify the right activities to undertake to maximize value creation.

I recommend that you read this book if you want to improve your decision making as a manager or board member. You should also read this book if you want to better identify activities that should create value as an investor.

I thought that this was an excellent book. It provided lots of the practical kind of details that I was looking for. This book is great for someone who has either limited or no experience in HPLC. It would also work as a refresher, for someone who has been out of the field for some time.

GOOD APPROACH TO HPLC TROUBLESHOOTING

I HAVE BEEN USING THIS MANUAL FOR THE PAST ONE YEAR AND HALF, AND IT HAS BEEN VERY HELPFUL WITH THE TROUBLE THAT I HAVE ENCOUNTERED RUNNING MY HPLC.. THE PROBLEMS ARE APPROACHED IN A VERY COMPREHENSIBLE MANNER, THE WAY TO ELIMINATE THE SOURCE OF THE PROBLEMS VERY WELL EXPLAINED AND THE STEP BY STEP ELIMINATION OF THOSE SOURCES.. I WILL RECOMMEND THIS BOOK TO ANYBODY WHO WORKS IN THE LABORATORY WITH AN HPLC

About the Author
Bob Gardner is a long-admired member of the aviation community. He began his flying career as a hobby in Alaska in 1960 while in the U.S. Coast Guard. By 1966, Bob earned his Private land and sea, Commercial, Instrument, Instructor, CFII, and MEL. Over the next 16 years he was an instructor, charter pilot, corporate and freight Captain, and Director of ASA Ground Schools.

Currently, Bob holds an Airline Transport Pilot Certificate with single and multi-engine land ratings; a CFI certificate with instrument and multi-engine land ratings; and a Ground Instructor's Certificate with advanced and instrument ratings. In addition, Bob is a Gold Seal Instructor and has been instructing since 1968. To top off this impressive list of accomplishments, Bob is also a well-known author, journalist, and airshow lecturer.

Offers a lot of help for the student pilot.

This is a great book. It's full of information on flight communications. Basic and professionally, it covers it all. Love how it's easy to read and easier to understand. Nothing beats the real thing, but this really gets you ready for that. A must buy for the student pilot.

Good essential book

This book covers most communication scenarios between ATC and Private pilots. It gives useful examples for common dialogs and helps pilots expect ATC responses. I think overall a good read with positive results on radio communication skills and confidence. This book also covers IFR dialogs during approaches.

Essential for a student pilot

This is an excellent resource for student pilots like myself that are not necessarily having trouble knowing what to say to ATC, rather, what kind of reply to expect from ATC.

Even if you are nearing the end of pilot training, buy this book, read the chapters covering the class of airspace that you most frequently fly in, and reap the benefits of feeling more comfortable on the radio.

The radio is a world of its own, and is a big one too. You can't study about it enough.
