Excellent material &organization; poor pedagogy &motivation

The heading says it all; this is a very comprehensive text, and well organized topic-wise, with good logical flow. But it gives a feeling of having been written in a hurry. Although not totally dry, it does not make for a motivational textbook. Examples are often left unexplained, when even a few lines of explanation would make it clear what's going on.
DO BUY this book if: 1. You're taking a course in algorithms, have a good professor, and you need sufficient material in one source.
2. You enjoy challenges in which the material HAS been COMPLETELY presented logically but you need to figure out what's going on.
3. You can tolerate poor pedagogical methods as long as all the material is there in one place.
DO NOT BUY this book if:
1. You have not had much exposure to the subject, and you need a self-study kind of book.
2. You do not have a motivational professor.
3. You need a textbook to be "engaging".

Don't Waste Your Time with This Book

The book is dull, dry, and cannot be regarded an educational text. It is also poorly written. The authors make no attempt to incorporate proven teaching methods. The authors seem clearly intent on portraying the material as being more difficult than it really is which will only serve to limit the ranks of individuals gaining expertise in the subject matter. The reader will find it difficult to understand the material in the fog created by the authors' pseudo-intellectualism and , in all liklihood, will have trouble understanding concepts which, if portrayed in the proper context, would have been relatively simple. Steer clear from this text. There are much better textbooks on the market in this subject area. Not only does the book fail to teach, it will sour your stomach for Algorithms.

The worst textbook in computer science. Don't buy it!!

I had to buy this book because I was taking an algorithm class (2 years ago) and the instructor was the co-author of the book. I didn't learn much from this book. As far as I can remember, part of contents are copied from another yet poorly written book by Horowitz (can't recall the name). Almost everybody in my class had to buy another algorithm book (Cormen) to pass the class.
This book was useless to me and many other students in my class.
Don't buy it!!

About the Author
Thomas S. Hischak is professor of theatre at the State University of New York at Cortland. He is the author of thirteen books, including Through the Screen Door: What Happened to the Broadway Musical When it Went to Hollywood (Scarecrow Press, 2004), Enter the Players: New York Stage Actors in the Twentieth Century (Scarecrow Press, 2003), and Boy Loses Girl: Broadway's Librettists (Scarecrow Press, 2002). Hischak is also coeditor of The Oxford Companion to American Theatre, 3rd Edition and winner of a Choice "Outstanding Academic Book" award.

About the Author

Catherine Fletcher is a historian of Renaissance and early modern Europe. Her first book, The Divorce of Henry VIII, brought to life the Papal court at the time of the Tudors. She consulted on the Golden-Globe-winning TV miniseries Wolf Hall and regularly broadcasts for BBC radio. She is Associate Professor in History and Heritage at Swansea University and has held research fellowships in London, Florence and Rome.

Fails to excite

I spent a considerable amount of time in Florence in my youth and was really interested in learning more about this Medici. I was disappointed. I did learn every item listed in his wardrobe, how many and what kind of attendants he had in his entourage when he traveled and what they served their honored guests at meals. Long on details and short on action. Lots of Papal intrigues, child brides and poisoning a of course. I did learn a lot about the man but the read was a slow crawl.
