The greatest historical fiction saga ever written

My excitement at seeing this compilation of Bernard Cornwell's brilliant Warlord Chronicles made available on Kindle cannot be overstated. I am a die-hard fan of Mr. Cornwell's work and have read nearly every book published during his prolific career. I already own well-thumbed hardcover copies of The Winter King, Enemy of God and Excalibur but immediately jumped at the chance to enjoy these books once again with the convenience of Kindle.

The books themselves are simply masterpieces of setting, plotting and character development. The archetypes that Mr. Cornwell uses in many of his other books were obviously inspired by the characters in this trilogy. Derfel, Merlin, Sansum, Nimue, Arthur, Guinevere, Culwch, Lancelot, and more...I can vividly recall the details of each of them like they were old friends. What happens to them takes on personal resonance because they are so well-developed.

A particular strength of Mr. Cornwell's writing is immersing the reader in a highly accurate and detailed world of the past. It seems almost unnecessary to describe how well the battles and fighting scenes are written because those are what Mr. Cornwell does best. The contrast between the glory of the works of the Roman Empire and the squalor of Dark Ages Britain is starkly illustrated, similarly with pagan Druidic traditions and early Christian rites. This is an in-depth examination of society, religion, politics, war, and economy as they might have been during Arthur's time.

Many of the plot developments remain shocking even for the experienced Cornwell reader. Kingdoms rise and fall, political machinations abound, and all the while the force of nature that is the Saxon invasion lurks in the background and gradually comes to the fore. No one feels safe, with no sense of plot armor for the main characters just because they are main characters. Terrible things can and will happen to them.

If you haven't already read the Warlord Chronicles then this is a great opportunity to get them all for a ridiculously reasonable price. I am jealous of anyone who has the privilege of reading the books for the first time. I suspect that most Cornwell devotees who own Kindles will have already taken the plunge and are happily re-immersing themselves in the world of Brittania.

Note on the Kindle edition: the font seems to be one size larger than what most Kindle books use as default. This is a very minor quibble. Thankfully, the map of Britain has made a smooth transition into the electronic form. The clear definition of the inking was preserved; none of the blurriness on Kindle pictures that can cause eye-aches here. Other publishers please take note!

Great books

Good books. This is one of the reasons I bought a kindle. I read these books a while ago, and have tried to get them in kindle-format for a while, and an very happy that they are now available. It is all three books of the "Warlord" series in one sitting, so be ready to lose some sleep... Arthurian legend without any frills. At a little over five dollars for three books, you can't go wrong with this purchase, and I do believe that this is what kindle-readers are looking for. If you liked the Saxon stories, you'll love this book.

I have only given one 5 star in my historical fiction reviews (count of monte cristo) . I thought long and hard about this review and could give it no other than a 5. It is everything a historical fiction should be. It is everything an epic should be. This is one book that really is what the other reviews say it is. 25 thousand glorious words of pure fun.

Readers will be particularly intrigued by this latest edition's most significant new feature: a chapter on corporate securities that offers alternative approaches to the valuation of corporate debt. Also, while much of the continuous-time portion of the theory is based on Brownian motion, this third edition introduces jumps--for example, those associated with Poisson arrivals--in order to accommodate surprise events such as bond defaults. Applications include term-structure models, derivative valuation, and hedging methods. Numerical methods covered include Monte Carlo simulation and finite-difference solutions for partial differential equations. Each chapter provides extensive problem exercises and notes to the literature. A system of appendixes reviews the necessary mathematical concepts. And references have been updated throughout. With this new edition, Dynamic Asset Pricing Theory remains at the head of the field.

He teaches and does research in the area of asset valuation, risk management, credit risk modeling, and fixed-income and equity markets. Finance for economists

This book provides the most elegant and coherent synthesis of finance theory, in a complete markets and frictionless settings.

For the reader interested in the theoretical foundations of modern financial models, this book has three main advantages over many of its competitors:

- It clearly shows the link between modern finance theory and the 40-year old Arrow-Debreu model. As this book will make clear, financial assets can be viewed as "bundles" of Arrow-Debreu contingent goods, and pricing kernels are simply extensions of Arrow-Debreu contingent state prices.

- It bridges the gap between arbitrage models on one hand, and models based on consumption, optimization/dynamic programming and general equilibrium on the other hand. Absence of arbitrage guarantees the existence of a stochastic discount factor, or pricing kernel. Optimality implies that the stochastic discount factor must be equal to the investors' intertemporal marginal rate of substitution.

- It provides a unified treatment of discrete-time and continuous-time models. Many finance textbooks focus on the mathematic tools and emphasize the difference between continuous-time and discrete-time tools--usually at the expense of the economics underlying both types of models. In contrast Duffie's book emphasizes the conceptual unity between continuous-time and discrete-time asset pricing.

This book was written more for students and academics than for pratictioners. It is not a reference or a recipe book for traders and programmers. Several chapters are devoted to general-equilibrium models that pratictioners are not likely to find useful. However, the essentials of derivative asset pricing and the term structure are also covered. The latest edition even includes a chapter on corporate finance.

Finally, this book is pretty much self-contained. All the graduate-level math results used in the proofs are presented either in the main body of the book, or in appendices.

Demanding but rewarding!

First of all, this book is for people with advanced mathematical preparation. Courses in functional analysis, measure theory, stochastic calculus and vector space optimization are in my opinion required for a deep understanding of the material in the book. Fortunately, the appendices are very good and provide many things that can help someone to follow the book.
In the first four chapters the writer develops the discrete-time theory,in order to provide a better understanding of the underlying ideas which remain the same in the next chapters which deal with the continuous-time setting.
Although the book needs a lot of effort from the reader, it is unique in that can help you see beyond the mathematics. In other words it USES the mathematics and it isn't just a layout of theorems and proofs.
Of course it can't be compared with books like Hull as it isn't accessible to everyone. But someone with the mathematical preparation , who has read Hull , should buy this book and he will never regret it.

painful and obscure

The mathematics of finance is not trivial, but neither is it really all that difficult; nevertheless, Duffie works to make you think that it is.

I maintain a scale of good versus bad mathematics writing in my head, against which I calibrate books I read. This scale stretches from, at one end, the faculty of Moscow University, in particular Israel Gelfand, Vladimir Arnold and Andre Kolmogorov, all of whom manage to explain to me hard things so that they seem easy, to, at the other, Darrell Duffie.

Yugoslavia was well positioned at the end of the cold war to make a successful transition to a market economy and westernization. The collapse of Yugoslavia into nationalist regimes led not only to horrendous cruelty and destruction, but also to a crisis of Western security regimes. Coming at the height of euphoria over the end of the cold war and the promise of a "new world order," the conflict presented Western governments and the international community with an unwelcome and unexpected set of tasks. Their initial assessment that the conflict was of little strategic significance or national interest could not be sustained in light of its consequences. By 1994 the conflict had emerged as the most challenging threat to existing norms and institutions that Western leaders faced. And by the end of 1994, more than three years after the international community explicitly intervened to mediate the conflict, there had been no progress on any of the issues raised by the country's dissolution.

In this book, Susan Woodward explains what happened to Yugoslavia and what can be learned from the response of outsiders to its crisis. She argues that focusing on ancient ethnic hatreds and military aggression was a way to avoid the problem and misunderstood nationalism in post-communist states. The real origin of the Yugoslav conflict, Woodward explains, is the disintegration of governmental authority and the breakdown of a political and civil order, a process that occurred over a prolonged period. The Yugoslav conflict is inseparable from international change and interdependence, and it is not confined to the Balkans but is part of a more widespread phenomenon of political disintegration.

Woodward's analysis is based on her first-hand experience before the country's collapse and then during the later stages of the Bosnian war as a member of the UN operation sent to monitor cease-fires and provide humanitarian assistance. She argues that Western action not only failed to prevent the spread of violence or to negotiate peace, but actually exacerbated the conflict. Woodward attempts to explain why these challenges will not cease or the Yugoslav conflicts end until the actual causes of the conflict, the goals of combatants, and the fundamental issues they pose for international order are better understood and addressed.

Much too technical for me. I have read a number of books on the subject. So, I am certainly interested in in-depth knowledge. But this book is too specialized, dealing with economic conditions in particular.

A medicinal pill for the effortlessly righteous

The book sometimes hides its thesis behind detail, and is not easy to follow. It was finished for the press before the Croat offensive of Spring 1995, and loses some perspective in consequence. Hence only four stars! It is very thoroughly researched (not just full of footnotes), and it is one of the very few books on the Bosnian war which doesn't simply pick heroes and villains - which has, of course, led to it being denounced as pro-Serb. Woodward's main line is that the basis of conflict was 'the economy, stupid'. Successive blunders in the terms of IMF loans, and misjudged changes in the federal constitution, set the constituent republics against each other. Misunderstanding of the issues (and German/Austrian favouritism to Balkan clients) led the European powers into grossly unprincipled and utopian interventions. The federation was levered apart, while preserving intact the constituent republics. This was a 'solution' to the wrong set of problems. The United States, continually encouraging the Bosnian Muslims to wait for the NATO fairy to rescue them (it didn't), completed the sorry work of war-making - though this last element is better documented elsewhere (e.g. in Rose's _Fighting for Peace_). I don't agree with all of the author's opinions. In particular, I think national allegiances run deeper and history is more relevant than she wants to believe. But it is a serious attempt to rescue this piece of contemporary history from self-indulgent moral one-upmanship and propaganda saturation. If only Woodward could write as well as Ivo Banac!

Gutsy scholarly challenge to the conventional wisdom.

Woodward, a scholar at the Brookings Institution, argues provocatively, but convincingly, that the breakup of Yugoslavia and the resulting ethnic conflict was _not_ inevitable and could have been avoided if the West had given more support to leaders within Yugoslavia (e.g. Ante Markovic) who wanted to promote democracy as well as free-market economic policies. She directly challenges the conventional wisdom articulated by the more readable and widely read "Balkan Ghosts" that history and culture made conflict in Yugoslavia inevitable. The complex and lengthy text of Woodward's book may deter some, but the highly nuanced arguments will prove fertile ground for those who want to better understand the causes of ethnic conflict both in Yugoslavia and more generally

absolutely useful for non- technical professionals

I have been working in the petrochemical industry as a financial advisor for 15 years. I often have to interact with chemical engineers in various aspects of my profession. This book has provided me a clear understanding of the complex petrochemical industry and its various processes.

When chemical engineers use terms,such as,sovent extraction, extrative distillation,adsorption,dehydrogenation,hydroformylation and the like,I am not only able to understand what is being said but I have often been able to respond effectively by asking pertinent questions in an area in which I am not an expert.

In order to wade smoothly through the book it is essential for the non-technical person to read and re-read the first chapter which provides all of the chemistry that you will need for the rest of the book. Even this first chapter has been written to make anyone understand the required chemistry.

Each of the subsequent chapters is devoted to different petrochemicals and lucidly explains the chemistry, the manufacturing processes,the uses of the chemicals being discussed, the handling of the chemical,etc.
Simplified diagrams of the manufacturing plant and various processes have helped me to quickly grasp the required essentials.

The chapters have been written in an easy to understand language with a touch of humor.

I would advise all technical and non-technical persons working for firms in the pertochemical industry to buy this book and keep it acessable at all times.

As someonce in the petrochemicals industry, I wanted to buy a comprehensive reference book so to start understanding the relations between feed stocks & prices and to look at the market in a wider perspective, etc.

There are rather limited number of available reference books in this topic, so I bought this book automatically. But, I almost become addicted to this book, reviewing it 10 mins everyday and still learn something new everday.

The book starts with a general overlook of the organic chemicals with reference to atomic structure & periodic table. Then, all the monomers, important hydrocarbons are explained in detail along with production methods and application areas.

Lots of hard-to-find information in one compact place.

In the first few chapters, this book provides ample references to foundation work by Phillips and Pierson, and then provides a detailed and robust presentation of a wide variety of different ocean spectra, with comparisons against plots of observed data. Previously I've had to search many different sources to find all of this information, and it's great to have it all in a compact, concise, consistent text.

If this text were digitized, it would be great to somehow have access to the actual measured data, such as that from the JONSWAP program, so that other statistical measures could be made.

let's reconsider

I read through the other reviews and I understand where they're coming from. Yes, the book is written like an alcoholic's 12 step program BUT Harris is kind of right. At first, I was almost confused as to whether it was a joke or not, but as I read further, I realized that the bad habits that writers have are actually base upon insecurities. Harris tells the reader to suck it up - quit caring so much about what other people might think of your writing - and write good srong sentences. Once you actually get to the 12 steps, I think there is some really useful information in there. I was not overpowered by techinical issues. Harris clearly and simply states what to look out for in your own writing. He actually lists them - which makes this a good reference manual to put on my desk. So the book is based on a joke (if that's what you want to call it). I found it funny. Even funnier, I saw myself in what he was saying.

Humorous read...

This book was pretty humorous. I picked it up after I thought it would be kind of like Eats, Shoots and Leaves. It deals more with sentence structure, though (although some parts of it does deal with grammar).

Harris writes about our "inner child writer" and how it still has a lot of repressed feelings, which is why we lash out and write bad sentences. I didn't really consider myself a malescribe, but I can certainly understand the frustration and disappointment when you encounter one.

Although this book was informative and humorous, my only complaint was that it went a little too far. At times, parts of it seemed far-fetched and there was a bit too much exaggeration. I know this was supposed to be a humorous approch - but maybe less is more. For example, Harris states that malescribism can lead to depression, and even death. Well, I'd say very rarely.

Despite my one dislike about it, When Good People Write Bad Sentences is a humorous and informative read. Especially when you have malescribism. (Oops, was that supposed to be a sentence fragment?) :)

A VERY HELPFUL BOOK - GIVE IT A CHANCE.

I have to tell you that I found this little book to be absolutely delightful and quite informative.

First though, I have to admire the author. Any person who writes a book addressing the correct way to write a language is leaving themselves open to all kind of cheap shots. Each time an author publishes such a book I am always stunned by the number of "experts" that seem to suddenly appear and attempt to tear the work to shreds. I suppose it is an ego thing with some people.

I am also always a bit hesitant to write a review on such books for the same reason. The last one I did cause at least two comments which more or less (in a very rude sort of way) telling me I should probably read the book again as I obviously had missed a lot of points. This criticism was just and truthful as I, more than any one I know, am fully aware of my shortcomings and ignorance of the English language. That is the reason I read and study books such as this. If I were already an expert, there really would be no need I should think.

Anyway...

This is a nicely done little work to help people write better, or at least correctly. The author has indeed used a quirky method as a hook in that he sets the entire book up as a 12 step program which should enable to break a writer's addiction to poor writing skills and such. I can see where this method may aggravate some people and indeed, even offend some, but the method the author used should not distract the reader from the essence of the book; the purpose. I personally had not problems with it. Then again, I do not take much very seriously, including myself.

And I must say that the author has given us some wonderful advice, helpful hints and tips and extremely useful information; information that many of us have not been exposed to since we left high school...if even then!

I found the writing to be refreshing, non technical, practical, humorous and very easy to understand. Now this is not a comprehensive course in English. The author has focused primarily on the sentences, the does and the don't. He addresses structure, correctness and readability and given the reader much to think about and ponder.

I personally (although you probably will not think so after reading this review) found it most helpful and I learned much and relearned much that I thought I knew but had never actually learned it or had long forgotten.

This is a good book. Give it a try.
